  CableLabs Cable Systems Overview
A programmer usually transmits a television signal through the air from a satellite, microwave, or local television antenna to the headend.
In the early days of cable television, trunk, feeder, and drop were the coaxial cables that carried the signal from the headend through a series of distribution points to the terminal equipment in a subscriber's home.
In the HFC architecture, a single fiber is run directly from the headend to an optical node in a neighborhood.

  SCS Communications "The Headend"
The headend equipment is the mainframe of the cable television system.
This is where the input from satellite signal, local antenna, and other sources are combined, balanced and amplified for distribution on a single cable.
For longevity of equipment the optimum temperature for the headend room is 80 degrees or below.

Cable television headend - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The headend facility is normally unstaffed and surrounded by some type of security fencing and is typically a building or large shed housing electronic equipment used to receive and re-transmit video over the local cable infrastructure.
The cable TV headend will normally have several large FSS-type television receive-only satellite television dishes for reception of cable/satellite TV networks such as ESPN, CNN, or HBO; a dedicated, non-movable dish is required for each satellite that the cable TV utility wishes to receive cable channels from for distribution over its system.
A device called a modulator is installed at the local station's facilities to feed their programming over this line to the cable TV headend, which in turn receives it with another device called a de-modulator.

Digital cable headend for cable television delivery system - Patent 5682195
It is an object of this invention to provide a cable headend that receives a large bandwidth of video/audio programming and selects programs from among the large bandwidth to accommodate a limited bandwidth between cable headend and viewer homes.
Each cable headend 42 accepts the entire signal and customizes the signal for the local cable system by stripping those portions of the satellite signal "s" that are unable to be handled by the local cable system 60, 62, 64.
Signals received by the cable headend 42 must be decompressed before transmission from headend 42 to subscriber location only when the compression algorithm used for the cable system differs from the one used for satellite transmission 41.

HITS - Headend in the Sky
A headend is a facility that contains sending and satellite receivers, has antennas which receive signals from local TV studios, and sometimes has TV studios inside the facility which produce shows and send the signals to other locations by satellite or antenna.
A device in a digital headend that receives digital signals (program and data), decrypts those signals, re-encrypts the signal, and passes them through to the cable plant for delivery to customers.
A device in a digital headend that receives control data from out-of-band the primary IRT and modulates it to a carrier frequency that modulator is used to deliver the control data to the digital set-top box.

 Birds-Eye.Net DHCP Recommendations
The Headend Provisioning Agent (HPA) provides a common user interface to the address provisioning system for the purpose of continued expansion and maintenance of the network and also enables localized BOOTP services for legacy headend nodes and provides a basis on which to distribute provisioning services.
Adding and modifying headend nodes has one additional feature with is the ability to generate DNS entries for the headend nodes.
Since the headend nodes do not have a IP address lease (dynamic address) associated with them they cannot obtain a dns entry using the current process of using Remedy, the provisioning server, and the dns script nor would it be feasible to have them manually entered.

The obvious preference would be to use an equipment installation philosophy that would allow the deployment of telephony and high-speed data to recently rebuilt or upgraded plant, but independent of continuing construction activity in the rest of the plant, thus creating the potential for incremental revenue before the entire plant upgrade has been completed.
All too often, the layout of the headend facility forces the system operator to wait until all the homes served by the headend are wired for two-way service before providing service to any of them due to equipment integration schedules at the headend.
Constant movement of programming between satellites, combined with channel re-arrangements, usually required that a bomb be dropped on the headend every two or three years so that the engineers could start from scratch again.
