Cross uses supportive detail to make the story seem possible - the headmaster uses a pin prick to verify that the child is indeed hypnotised and not just pretending, something which catches Dinah out when she attempts to discover what happens in the secret school assemblies.
I may not have been alerted to this if Cross had not mentioned '1984' during the story and at the climax, but at the mention of the title the parallel was immediately apparent.
