Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) is an association of the head teachers of 242 leading day and boarding independent boys' and coeducational schools in the United Kingdom, Crown dependencies and the Republic of Ireland.
The size of the Conference has grown - as late as the 1970s, membership was confined to a maximum of 200.
The Conference dates from 1869 when Edward Thring, Headmaster of Uppingham, asked thirty seven of his fellow headmasters to meet at his house to consider the formation of a "School Society and Annual Conference".

 King's School - HMC
HMC was founded by Edward Thring, celebrated Headmaster of Uppingham, who in 1869 invited thirty-seven fellow headmasters to meet at his house to consider forming a school society and annual conference.
Each year the member heads (headmasters and headmistresses of member schools) meet in early October to discuss and debate matters of mutual concern.
Eligibility for membership depends upon the degree of independence enjoyed by the head and the school and the academic standards obtaining in the school, which are reflected by both the academic success at public examination and the proportion of the pupils who are in the sixth form.

In responding to the problem, the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference has issued new advice urging schools not to rely simply on a policy of "zero toleration" and automatic expulsion for pupils caught using drugs.

Independent schools launched swingeing attacks yesterday on the "self-indulgence" of divorced parents and the "arrogance" of the world's major religions.

He said that the children of parents who divorced in pursuit of "self-gratification" were far more likely than those who grew up under the same roof as their mother and father to require pastoral care at school to improve their work, behaviour and relations with others.
