Formerly part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947.
In 1941, the Army Air Corps became a part of the new U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF), and the GHQ Air Force was redesignated the subordinate Air Forces Combat Command.
Air Force personnel assigned to honor guard duties wear, for dress occasions, a modified version of the standard service dress uniform, but with silver or white trim on the sleeves and trousers, with the addition of medals, sword belt, wheel cap with silver trim and AF Symbol, and a silver shoulder cord.

Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) was created July 1, 1992 through the reorganization of Air Force Logistics Command and Air Force Systems Command.
It is the Air Force’s largest command in terms of funding and second in terms of personnel.
AFMC fulfills its mission of equipping the Air Force with the best weapon systems through the Air Force Research Lab and eight specialized centers responsible for the "cradle-to-grave" oversight for aircraft, electronic systems, missiles and munitions.

It was as commanding officer of the 454th Bombardment Group, a 15th Air Force unit in Italy, that Colonel Aynesworth won the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver Star Medal, and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

The AFSG was formally established in the Directorate of Intelligence, HQ USAF, on 23 June 1948, with a cadre of eleven officers and some clerical enlisted personnel on loan from the Army Security Agency.
On 20 October 1948, the United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS), the forerunner of the Air Intelligence Agency, was established at Arlington Hall Station, Va., as a major air command to perform cryptologic and communications security missions for the Air Force.
