The men replied that they didn't want their heads shot off, they wouldn't go against their friends, it was a workingman's fight, and so on.

The defendant Corporations are persons within the intent of the clause in section 1 of the Fourteen Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which forbids a State to deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
The state board of equalization, in making the supposed assessment of said roadway of defendant, did knowingly and designedly include in the valuation of said roadway the value of fences erected upon the line between said roadway and the land of coterminous proprietors.
It appears, as already stated, from the evidence, that the fences were included in the valuation of the defendants' property; but under what head, whether of franchise, roadway, or road-bed, does not appear.

In The Poet in the Desert, condemnation of the state and of authority is explicit and severe, but Wood does not renounce all law; rather he proclaims the law of nature as supreme, as he did in A Masque of Love.

A peaceful leader of a peaceful tribe, he was forced into a state of war in 1877 and helped lead 750 of his people on a 1,500-mile flight to Canada.

To add to the confusion, there are in different parts of the United States a barrel for beer, consisting of 32 gallons; the barrel for corn, of 5 bushels; for fish, of 220 pounds; for flour, 196 pounds; for lime, 320 pounds; and for lamp-oil, 43 gallons.
It is stated to be the intention of the government to introduce into Japan at an early period a new system of weights and measures based on the decimal system of France.

In its 85th annual report (1935), the Syracuse State School rightly noted that it was “the pioneer institution in the United States for the care and training of mentally deficient children.” Surgery was also done in the old building, and at least one child was born there.

Dawn broke on January 8, 1877, in cold gray hues with the sun illuminating the thickly packed clouds that hung low over the mountains surrounding the Tongue River Valley.
In the wake of the illegal invasion of the Black Hills by goldseekers, the United States abrogated sections of the 1868 treaty, stripping the tribes of their title to the hunting grounds and the Black Hills, and deployed troops to the area.
Each advance, however, was met with rapid exchanges of rifle fire accentuated by the roar of artillery, which eventually forced the warriors to retreat to the shelter of the hills.
