The Heads of State of Namibia and Finland will preside jointly over the upcoming Millennium Summit owing to the event's unique symbolism, the General Assembly decided this morning as it adopted a resolution on the organization of the Summit.
The text states that owing to the unique symbolic moment of the event, the Summit's Co- Chairpersons -- the Heads of State of the respective countries of the President of the Assembly's fifty-fourth session and the President of the fifty-fifth session (Namibia and Finland) -- will preside jointly over it.
The Heads of State and government must be given priority both in the plenary and in the round tables.

Malawi was able to produce all her food requirements in the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 seasons as a result of favourable climatic conditions and universal free distribution of inputs.
This season, 2001-2002, the situation is much worse because Malawi was hit by the late onset of rains and a long dry spell during a critical plant growth period in February 2002.
Malawi is committed to working as a nation, but also as a member of SADC to make the regional cooperation under NEPAD a success.

It was stated that civil society needs to play a role at two levels, the first one being to facilitate, where possible, the establishment of independent anti corruption institutions and secondly to continue researching in order to qualify and quantify corruption and to oversee the implementation of the protocol.
Corruption was likened to the rotting of the fish syndrome, where the head rots firsts and therefore it is necessary to chop of the head before the rot spreads to the rest of the body.

Malawi and Mozambique have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at identifying resources for the construction of the ambitious multi-billion kwacha Shire-Zambezi waterway project to connect Malawi to the Indian ocean.
Mussa said the MOU—known as Commitment Agreement—was made in April this year and is pending signing by the Heads of State of the two countries before it is presented to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) for financing.
Economic Planning and Development Minister David Faiti quashed aside claims by critics that the project is a failure, saying several heads of state were impressed with the project idea when it was presented at the recent African Union (AU) summit.

Amnesty International is writing to the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Heads of State or Government in advance of their meeting in Blantyre, Malawi, on 13 to 15 January 2002 to urge the assembled leaders to take a firm stance on the escalating human rights crisis in Zimbabwe.
At that Summit, the heads of state met with Zimbabwean government representatives as well as the political opposition, and heard presentations from some civil society groups although others such as the Crisis Conference Coordinating Committee, a coalition of leading Zimbabwean rights groups, were blocked by the Zimbabwean authorities from making presentations.
Amnesty International also calls upon the SADC Heads of State to discuss concrete means of independently and impartially monitoring the on-going loss of life, assaults and nationwide reports of torture, intimidation and forced displacement.
