Gabon’s current President, El-Hadj Omar Bongo, who assumed office in 1967, is one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state.

Gabon is a republic dominated by a strong presidency.
The State dominates much of the economy through telecommunications, timber export, and oil refinery parastatals; however, the production of wood, oil, and minerals is largely private, and the water, electric, railroad, and sugar parastatals have been privatized.
In the July 1999 case of a group of off-duty police officers who reportedly killed 2 persons and wounded 11 in a vendetta attack in a Libreville discotheque, the police officers initially were cleared of wrongdoing by their superiors, then later subjected to minor disciplinary measures.

Violence over the past week in Ivory Coast, a former French colony, has caused some 5,000 expatriates to flee, put the French army on the streets of the main city Abidjan and raised fears of a conflict that could engulf the wider region.
Heads of state from Gabon, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Libya, Nigeria and Senegal are due to attend an emergency summit in Abuja later on Sunday.
General Henri Poncet, head of the French troops in Ivory Coast, said the situation had improved considerably for now and he hoped stability would return.

The Angolan government is reported to have evidence that UNITA's representative in France, Isaias Samakuva, holds a passport from Cote d'Ivoire.

On 8 February 1997, MISAB was deployed in Bangui, comprising a total of some 800 troops from Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon and Mali; and later from Senegal and Togo, under the military command of Gabon and with the logistical and financial support of France.
Its mandate (S/1997/561, annex, appendix I) was approved on 6 March 1997 by President Bongo, as senior representative of the Heads of State and Government delegated by the Ougadougou summit meeting of December 1996.
