Heaf testing is carried out by the AMO in various health centres throughout the HSE Mid-Western Area area.
The heaf test is performed on the forearm of the baby and the baby re-attends the clinic after one week for reading of the response.
A mantoux test is similar to a heaf test in that it is performed if a child presents for BCG vaccination and is over 3 months of age.

The test is given to children aged 13 to 14 before vaccination against TB.
The heaf test works by injecting tuberculin into the skin and then measuring a child's reaction to it over the space of one week.
It is not expected that all of the 720,000 heaf heads issued in the past year will be recalled, as many may have already been used.

Their father had a grade 2 Heaf test result (and a previous history of BCG) (this is equivalent to a Mantoux response of induration of diameter 5 to 14 mm).
Heaf grades 0 and 1 or a Mantoux response of 0 to 4 mm induration are regarded as negative; those with a grade 2 reaction (or a Mantoux response of induration of diameter 5 to 14 mm following injection of 0.1 mL purified protein derivative 100 U/mL) are positive.
A strongly positive reaction to tuberculin is demonstrated by a Heaf grade 3 or 4 or a Mantoux response with induration of at least 15-mm diameter.

TB Skin Test: The Test   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
TB skin tests are requested when the doctor wants to screen their patient for a latent TB infection.
TB skin tests are not used as a general population screen (as TB is relatively rare in the U.S.), but are frequently done prior to a person joining an at risk population, such as: going to college, or becoming a teacher or healthcare worker.
You may not respond to a TB skin test if you have had a recent viral infection or a "live" vaccine for conditions such as measles, mumps, chickenpox, influenza, or if you have overwhelming tuberculosis, another bacterial infection, or are taking immune supprressive drugs such as corticosteroids.

 Heaf test
Until 2005, the test was used in the United Kingdom to determine if the BCG vaccine was needed; the Mantoux test is now used instead.
The Heaf test was preferred in the UK, because it was felt that the Heaf test was easier to interpret, with less inter-observer variability, and that less training was required to administer and to read the test.
The Mantoux test is preferred in the United States for the diagnosis of tuberculosis; multiple puncture tests, such as the Heaf test and Tine test, are not recommended.

A tuberculin test conversion is defined as an increase of 10 or more mm within a 2-year period regardless of age.
A negative test does not exclude active tuberculosis, especially if the test was done within six to eight weeks of acquiring the infection, if the infection is overwhelming, or if the patient is immunocompromised.
Positive reactions to subsequent tests may be misinterpreted as a new infection.

 Smarter testing for TB
The company hopes that their new technology will replace the UK's standard Heaf test, in which a crude extract from dead TB organisms is placed on the skin, then pushed in by a nine-pronged needle to stimulate an immune response.
The studies reveal, according to the researchers, that the new test is a radical improvement on the current skin test, and that, unlike the skin test, it works well in people with weaker immune systems, such as children, the elderly and those immunosuppressed with diseases like HIV.
This test is needed as never before because TB is resurging in the developed world and already parts of the UK have TB rates as high as India.

More than 30 primary schoolchildren have tested positive for exposure to tuberculosis bacteria after a teacher was diagnosed as having contracted the disease, a local authority said.
A total of 60 year-six children, aged 10 and 11, were tested for the disease following the diagnosis of the teacher at Portsdown primary school in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on January 19, according to Portsmouth city council.
The Heaf test given to the children shows that they have been exposed to the bacteria that causes the disease and does not indicate that they have contracted the disease, according to the spokeswoman.

The T-SPOT test was more reliable than the century old Heaf test in trials in 4,000 patients and is approved for use in Europe and global TB hotspots.
The traditional test for TB, known as the tuberculin skin test or Heaf test, has several shortcomings.
Although the new test is more expensive than the older methods, it would eventually reduce the higher costs associated with treating TB patients, experts said.

Accurate identification of early tuberculosis infection possible with new blood test
A new, rapid blood test for tuberculosis which can accurately identify infection at an early stage could enable doctors to reliably identify people who are infected before they have actually developed the disease, conclude authors of a study in this week's issue of THE LANCET.
However, this approach is limited by the inaccuracy of the existing test for diagnosing early tuberculosis infection, the tuberculin skin test (TST), also known as the Heaf test, which can give false-positive results in people vaccinated with BCG or exposed to related environmental bacteria.
They assessed and compared the efficacy of their new blood test with the TST for the detection of symptom-free infected individuals by correlation of test results with the degree of exposure to an infectious index case.

Screening consists of a skin test (Mantoux Test or Heaf Test) which is carried out by a public health doctor.  The results of the test are read within 48-72 hours (Mantoux Test) or within one week (Heaf Test).
A positive test does not necessarily mean that a person has TB.  A chest X-ray is arranged if the test is positive.
Each person who has screening tests is assessed by a public health doctor.  Depending on the test results, a percentage of these people will either be prescribed preventive antibiotics (usually Isoniazid) or offered chest x-ray follow up for a specified period.
