Healesville is an outer-eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 52km from the Melbourne centre and situated on the Watts river, a tributary of the Yarra River.
Healesville is well known for the Healesville Sanctuary - a nature park with hundreds of native Australian animals displayed in a semi-open natural setting and an active platypus breeding program.
Much of what is now Healesville lies on the ancestral land of the Wurundjeri people, and aboriginal missions have been there in the past.

The area around Healesville was originally occupied by the Yarra Yarra or Wurrundjeri Aboriginal group who were settled at the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reservation on Badger Creek, 5 km south of the town, from 1863.

Healesville is located about 120 kilometres from Melbourne.
But Healesville Sanctuary to me is the complete zoo, the only one I have ever visited where the visitor can actually see the three aims of zoos in practice; conservation with their breeding of endangered species, research - for example into the causes of bush die back and education with their excellent educational centre.
I would need to find my notebook to demonstrate that Healesville has much more to offer the visitor in the way of Australian wildlife than Melbourne but the best way is simply to go there - and on Victoria's superb integrated transport system it is easy and cheap to do on public tranport.

When I first visited Healesville Sanctuary in 1974 it was an Australian animals for entertainment place.
Small wonder that Healesville bred their platypus last year -- a very rare and wonderful event.
The helmeted honeyeater's population is down to less than 50 but here they are flitting around a large aviary and nesting far from marauding cats or bulldozers tearing down their habitat.

A baby platypus hatched at the Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria, is believed to be only the second platypus born in captivity.
But platypus keepers Norm Holland and Les Fisk at the Healesville Sanctuary realised they had succeeded when the unnamed baby platypus was spotted on video tape from surveillance cameras over Easter.
Significantly the only other record of a platypus hatched in captivity was also at the Healesville Sanctuary in 1944.
