§3. "Beowulf:" Scandinavian Traditions; Personality of the Hero; Origin and Antiquity of the Poem; the Religious ...
The reigns of Scyld’s son and grandson, Beowulf and Healfdene, are quickly passed over, and we are next brought to Hrothgar, the son of Healfdene.
Scyld, the ancestor of the Scyldungas (the Danish royal family), clearly corresponds to Skiöldr, the ancestor of the Skiöldungar, though the story told of him in Beowulf does not occur in Scandinavian literature.
Healfdene and his sons Hrothgar and Halga are certainly identical with the Danish king Hafdan and his sons Hròarr (Roe) and Helgi; and there can be no doubt that Hrothwulf, Hrothgar’s nephew and colleague, is the famous Hròlfr Kraki, the son of Helgi.

Arrived was the hour when to hall proceeded Healfdene’s son: the king himself would sit to banquet.
To Beowulf gave the bairn of Healfdene a gold-wove banner, guerdon of triumph, broidered battle-flag, breastplate and helmet; and a splendid sword was seen of many borne to the brave one.
Then the earls’-defence {15d} on the floor {15e} bade lead coursers eight, with carven head-gear, adown the hall: one horse was decked with a saddle all shining and set in jewels; ’twas the battle-seat of the best of kings, when to play of swords the son of Healfdene was fain to fare.

Kings and kingship in Viking Northumbria
The Albann/Healfdene of the Annals of Ulster and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, mentioned above, may also be identified with an Halbdeni mentioned in the Annales Fuldenses for 873 as the brother of the Danish king Sigifridus and as active on the European continent (in Metz) in that year.
The case for the identification is strengthened by the fact that 873 is one of the years in which the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle does not indicate that Healfdene was active in England.
There is thus a case for saying that Inwære, Healfdene, Hubba, Berno and Sigifridus, all of them active in the second half of the ninth century (the first two and the fifth of them as kings, if the relevant identifications can be accepted), were brothers.

Now we know of but two Danish kings called Helgi who had their royal residence in Zealand; (1) and by far the more famous of these two is that Helgi who, in Icelandic sources, is son of the Shielding Halfdan, and brother of Hroar---in Béowulf, Hâlga, son of Healfdene, and brother of Hrôthgâr.
The race to which Frôda and Ingeld belonged, were evidently represented in English tradition as the constant opponents of the kinsmen of Healfdene.
In Scandinavian and especially in Icelandic tradition, there are also stories of battles between Halfdan and the Shieldings of his race on the one side, and the kinsmen of Frothi and Ingjald on the other.
