In Cape Town more than 350 health professionals, including doctors, nurses, therapists and scientists, expressed their "deep concern that the HIV epidemic in South Africa is out of control".
Professor David Power of the School of Child and Adolescent Health (Paediatrics) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) said between 25% and 40% of children in facilities where they worked and taught on any given day were HIV positive.

 Emory vaccine study in South Africa achieves significant reductions in pneumonia
In a recent clinical trial conducted in 40,000 children in Soweto, South Africa, scientists from Emory University and the University of Witwatersrand found that a new version of a pneumococcal vaccine reduced the incidence of pneumonia in vaccinated children by more than 20%.
The study was conducted under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Medical Research Council of South Africa in collaboration with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, which developed the vaccine.
Keith P. Klugman, M.D., professor of international health in Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health and professor of medicine in Emory School of Medicine, was principal investigator of the study.

The first grants awarded through the ISHED competition are designed to determine the extent to which population health status and mental health status serve as predictive indicators of economic performance using a wide range of research methodologies and testable hypotheses.
Five of the ISHED awards are full five-year grants, and five are at a reduced level for two years and are intended to support further development of the research approach and methods for potential future funding.
