 The Heartland Institute - District court upholds Clinton national monuments - by James M. Taylor
A federal district court on November 15 upheld former President Bill Clinton's designation of six national monuments on federal lands in four Western states.
The district court, however, ruled Clinton acted properly because he used the "magic words" associated with the Antiquities Act.
By explicitly stating the lands designated for national monument status were "of scientific interest," "historic," and limited to "the smallest area," Clinton ensured his judgment was beyond judicial scrutiny.

The Heartland District Lifespan Religious Education Committee announces the activation of the Anne Miller Lifespan Religious Education Award for the Heartland Unitarian Universalist District to honor significant contributions to lifespan religious education.
It was originally established by the Ohio Valley UU District Lifespan Religious Education Committee in 1989 and was last given as an OVUUD award in 2000.
Now a Heartland UU District award, it will be given at the annual meeting each April.

 The Heartland Institute - District Drops Successful Singapore Math Program - by School Reform News staff
Students in four Maryland schools who were taught using the Singapore Math program significantly outperformed their peers who were not in the program, according to a school system study released in February.
The new curriculum is “pure fuzzy math,” according to John Hoven, another critic of the district’s regular math program.
Since students from Singapore had taken top billing in the TIMSS math section, interest developed in the math curriculum used in Singapore, which emphasizes mastery of basic math facts before moving on to theory.

 Heartland Community College: Financial Aid Office Scholarship Opportunities
Applicant must be an Illinois resident with at least 30 semester hours completed, have been a full-time student in Spring of 2003 and be registered as a full-time student for the Fall 2003 semester with a 3.5 GPA.
A new scholarship at Heartland Community College will allow all qualifying area valedictorians and salutatorians from the 17 high schools in District 540 to attend the College for free.
The scholarship can be renewed for all four semesters the student attends Heartland, if requirements for grade point average and hours are maintained.

The Los Angeles Unified School District recently approved contracts totaling almost $5 million to two private companies to provide supplemental education services for students in the nation's second largest school district, which has 682,000 students, 30,000 teachers, and 790 schools.
On April 14, Kaplan Educational Centers was awarded a $3.3 million contract to conduct after-school, extended-day programs in supplementary reading, math, language arts, and science education for approximately 6,000 students at 25 public schools and six Catholic schools beginning in May 1998.

On February 20th, 2002 Congressman Virgil Goode, representative for the 5th District in Virginia, announced that the Virginia's Heartland Partnership had been awarded $1,743,000 through the Environmental Protection Agency's "State and Tribal Assistance Grants" program.
This is a matching grant with the federal government participating 55% and the local government and Heartland Partnership participating 45%.
Available for viewing at the announcement were a "Land Use Concept" for the Virginia's Heartland Regional Partnership Industrial Park as well as an "Entrance Concept".

At the time of nomination and election, each shall be a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of the district he or she is hoping to represent.
In such event the largest District has at least double the annual members as the smallest District, the Districts shall be caused to gain or lose constituent states to bring about equality of representation, while still retaining geographic integrity.
Beginning with the annual election of 2005, any incumbent who is still a member in good standing of the federation and who is not subject to term limits shall be placed upon the ballot in the district in which he or she resides unless he or she specifically declines such nomination.

"Cajun Heartland, USA" is an eight-parish region of south Louisiana composed of Lafayette Parish, five adjoining parishes (Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion), as well as Evangeline and St. Mary parishes.
These Cajun Heartland parishes are identified as such for travelers by distinctive border road signs showing the region’s geographical outline.

Districts can be formed around geography, theology, values, shared interests, congregational characteristics, worship styles, etc. Activities of districts may include providing tangible support for member congregations, planning joint events, planting additional mission congregations, recruiting and training (or supervision of training) of seminarians.
Individuals whose congregations have not joined LCMC or a district may participate as associate members or by forming chapters, according to the guidelines of the district and LCMC.
Forming a district within LCMC need not be a complicated nor difficult.
