Heartland rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The quintessential heartland rock album was probably Indiana-native Mellencamp's, with its depictions of struggling family farmers, odes to small town life, tales of the passing of generations, and tributes to the redemptive power of rock 'n' roll.
In concert, heartland rock often took the form of crowd-rousing anthems, leading to comparisons with arena rock.
Heartland rock faded away as a recognized genre by the early 1990s, as rock music in general lost influence with younger audiences and as heartland's artists turned to more personal works.

Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be heard in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.

Rock and Roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be seen in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
While mainstream rock music was no longer able to shock or offend, new forms of music, particularly Punk rock and Rap emerged to fill this role; people who as youths delighted in the effect rock and roll had on their parents found themselves railing in a similar fashion against their children's music.
Rock musicians and fans have consistently struggled with the paradox of "selling out" -- to be considered "authentic", rock music must keep a certain distance from the establishment and its constructs; however certain compromises must be made in order to become successful and to make music available to the public.

Garage rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Garage rock (performed by garage bands, not to be confused with UK Garage, a genre of dance music) was a simple, raw form of rock and roll that emerged in the mid-1960s, largely in the United States.
As rock music journalistists and collectors began to reconsider the garage bands of the sixties, they were labelled "punk rock" (the term was coined by the critic Dave Marsh, and it caught on among rock journalists).
Bands playing garage punk differed from the garage rock revival bands in that they were less cartoonish caricatures of '60s garage bands and their overall sound was even more loud, obnoxious, and raw, often infusing elements of proto punk and 1970s punk rock (hence the "garage punk" term).

Hard rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hard rock is a form of rock and roll music which finds its closest roots in early 1960s garage rock.
Hard rock is often loosely defined, and is primarily of use in describing radio station formats.
The term "hard rock" is also used as an umbrella term for genres such as punk, gothic rock, industrial rock and heavy metal, in order to distinguish them from softer, more radio friendly pop rock music.

Progressive rock is a broad and convergent style of rock music and progressive music which arose in the late 1960s, reaching the peak of its popularity in the early 1970s, but continuing as a musical form to this day.
Progressive rock is often perceived as complex and elaborate music, requiring a high level of musicianship from the artists, mainly because of the impression left by some of the most popular progressive bands.
With the advent of punk rock in the late 1970's, and its earlier precursor pub rock, popular and critical opinion moved toward a simpler and more aggressive style of rock, with the words "pretentious", "pompous", and "overblown" often being used to describe progressive rock.

Post-rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally used to describe the music of such bands as Stereolab, Disco Inferno, Seefeel, Bark Psychosis and Pram, it spread out to be frequently used for all sorts of jazz- and Krautrock-influenced, instrumental, electronica-added music made after 1994.
Bands such as My Bloody Valentine are often referred to as post-rock thanks to the overuse of the term when categorizing rock bands with a more experimental edge to them.
Closely related to post-rock is the genre known as Math rock, characterized by more percussive timbres, more dissonant harmonic gestures, and more prog-influenced arrangements.

At its core, heartland rock was straightforward rock & roll infused with Americana -- more streamlined than garage rock, but not as traditionalist as roots rock.
Although heartland rock wasn't solely political -- almost every heartland artist had a pile-driving, good-time rocker -- it all was united by the attitude that music should be about something.
During the '90s, the genre faded somewhat, as many bands that would have been a heartland outfit at the beginning of the '80s chose to follow an Americana route, but there were still pockets where the faithful kept the flame burning.
