  Stephen King Hearts in Atlantis
Hearts in Atlantis, King's newest fiction, is composed of five interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999.
He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror.
In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest...and confront their own collective heart of darkness, where laughter may be no more than the thinly disguised cry of the beast.

Hearts in Atlantis is powerful in the way that characterises all of Stephen King's works, even the most schlocky, and brought me to tears at times.
Hearts in Atlantis is also deeply flawed, both by its own internal construction problems (being basically four stories under one roof), and by some of the plot devices that King borrows from other books (the Dark Tower series in particular).
Hearts in Atlantis is, in the end, about those nightmares which are most terrifying, those nightmares which are of the heart and not of mind or body.

Hearts in Atlantis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hearts in Atlantis (1999), is a fictional work by Stephen King.
Significantly, the opening epigram of the collection is the Peter Fonda line from the end of Easy Rider: "We blew it." All of the stories are about Baby Boomers, and in all of them, the members of that generation fail profoundly, or are paying the costs of some profound failure on their part.
The next part, "Hearts in Atlantis", takes place in 1966 and is about Peter Riley who has just started at the university.

The opening selection, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," is long enough to be a novel, "Hearts in Atlantis," the second piece, is a novella; "Blind Willie" and "Why We're in Vietnam" are short stories, and the final piece, "Heavenly Shades of Night are Falling," is a short, sweet coda.

The film, unfortunately, focuses primarily on the weakest of the three, and while Anthony Hopkins (2001's "Hannibal") is his usual radiant, understated self as Ted Brautigan, the subplot involving his psychic abilities and fear of the "low men" doesn't quite fit with the more realistic sections of the picture.
Splendidly photographed by late cinematographer Piotr Sobocinski (2001's "Angel Eyes"), for which this was his final project before his death, "Hearts in Atlantis" ends up packing quite a wallop by the finale, as the movie allows the viewer to recollect on their own childhood.
"Hearts in Atlantis" has its problematic areas, and not every moment is as good as the last, but those sporadic downfalls do not take away the mood or powerful effect that director Scott Hicks creates, as a whole.
