Heartsease is a pretty flower that is native to Europe and is widely cultivated as a garden ornamental, but it also grows wild in fields, meadows and along forest edges in the temperate regions of North America, Asia and Europe.
Heartsease (or Pansy, as it is sometimes called) is occasionally referred to as a cultivated weed with hollow stems, bearing lanceolate leaves and solitary flowers of yellow, blue-violet; or it may be dual-colored with white.
Heartsease is said to strengthen the blood vessels and stabilize capillary membrane fragility and act as a gentle circulatory stimulant.
Both the salicylates and the rutin contained in the plant are anti-inflammatory, a partial explanation of the traditional use herbalist's found for Heartsease, treating and arthritis.
Heartsease is used to treat a range of respiratory disorders such as bronchitis and whooping cough.
Due to the high concentration of rutin in the flowers, this herb may be employed to prevent bruising and broken capillaries, to check the build up of fluid in the tissues and to reduce atherosclerosis and in so doing help reduce blood pressure.
Warts and skin inflammation are the only disorders for which Heartsease has a demonstrable effect, but it has also been used for relief of eczema, acne, impetigo, female genital itching, and cradle cap in infants.
It is taken internally for constipation and poor metabolism, and was once considered a remedy for respiratory and throat inflammation, whooping cough, and feverish colds.
Heartsease is available in crushed and powdered form, for use in teas and compresses, and as a bath additive.
Set against a backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, the mills and the Great War, 'Heartsease' is the story of one woman's strength and determination to overcome and prevail against all odds.
It is a family saga, inspired by her late Father, a well known local singer and an avid storyteller who had remarkable recall of the past.
'Heartsease' spans the period between 1890 and 1935 and tells a nostalgic tale of fortitude, emotion and strong human relationships.
Though a near relative of the Violet, it does not produce any of the curious bud-like flowers - cleistogamous flowers - characteristic of the Violet, as its ordinary showy flowers manage to come to fruition so that there is no necessity for any others.
Darwin found that the humble bee was the commonest insect visitor of the Heartsease, though the moth Pluvia visited it largely - another observer mentions Thrips small wingless insects - as frequent visitors to the flowers.
It was formerly in much repute as a remedy for epilepsy, asthma and numerous other complaints, and the flowers were considered cordial and good in diseases of the heart, from which may have arisen its popular name of Heartsease as much as from belief in it as a love potion.

In contrast to the medieval spareness of Pavane’s previous CD Dangerous Days, the instrumental and vocal music from the 16th and 17th centuries featured here on Heartsease is more colourful and spirited.
Recorded live in Albany Road Baptist Church, Cardiff, Heartsease demonstrates Pavane’s musical versatility and variety, and creates the vitality of a live performance: here is music played with the energy and confidence of this established early music band well into its second decade of music making.
A limited number of copies of the Dangerous Days CD are also still available, at a cost of just £10 - or you can buy both CDs together for just £20.
