Wood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is remarkable that the inner heartwood of old trees remains as sound as it usually does, since in many cases it is hundreds of years, and in a few instances thousands of years, old.
There may be decided differences in the grain of heartwood and sapwood cut from a large tree, particularly one that is mature.
This is produced by deposits in the heartwood of various materials resulting from the process of growth, increased possibly by oxidation and other chemical changes, which usually have little or no appreciable effect on the mechanical properties of the wood.
