The astronauts scanned heat shield test samples, Discovery's wing leading edge, space station radiators and themselves during the demonstration.
Covered in a composite material known as reinforced carbon carbon (RCC), those heat shield areas are subjected to the most extreme temperatures experienced by an orbiter during re-entry.
Astronauts currently use boom-mounted laser and visible light cameras to examine heat shield surfaces for damage in-flight, but the new tool — known as an EVA IR camera — would search for cracks or voids between layers of RCC material that could come loose during re-entry.

This would allow Superman to do things like reflect his heat vision off of mirrors or heat-resistant surfaces, etc. in addition to doing the "heat up the gun" trick.
Instead of reflecting the heat vision off of something, he's using the gun (or whatever) to transmit the heat to the wielder.
For example, you might be able to transmit more damage by heating up a bazooka than you can by heating up a kazoo, simply because the bazooka is sturdier, and can withstand more heat, and for a longer duration before melting, than the kazoo can.

Heat Vision and Jack » Dave Johnston - newdave.com
Way back in 1999, while I was running around like a smacked ass at IU, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Co. were filming what might be the worst television pilot ever for the Fox network.
Way before they were known as some sort of hip Hollywood collective, this group was busy creating Heat Vision and Jack, a sci-fi spoof that was supposed to be Jack Black’s big splash introduction into pop culture stardom.
Joining Austin on his many adventures is his sidekick “Heat Vision” - his old unemployed roommate Doug (voiced by Owen Wilson), who was turned into a motorcycle when evil NASA hitman slash actor Ron Silver (played by actor Ron Silver) blasted him with an experimental laser raygun.

 Rattlesnakes
While other areas have larger rattlesnakes, the Sonoran Desert region is blessed (no, that isn’t a misprint) with more species of rattlesnakes than is any other region in the world—and many of them will bite large beasts like us if we are perceived to be a threat.
Heat given off by an animal creates a heat image; therefore, rattlesnakes have “heat vision.” The heat images are integrated with visual ones in the brain.
This type of vision is helpful for nocturnal predators, for it enables them to hunt effectively even in total darkness.

Snakes heat vision enables accurate attacks on prey
Also called “heat vision,” the infrared rays, which have longer wavelengths than those of visible light, signify the presence of warm-blooded prey in 3 dimensions, which helps snakes aim their attacks.
Whereas the group found that snakes have a fairly high input-noise tolerance, they found that one of the most vital requirements is accurate detectors and the ability to detect edges in the images produced on the pit membrane.
“A heat distribution in 3-dimensional space causes a heat image on the pit membrane that, by the very nature of the big pit hole, is heavily blurred,” said Sichert.
