 Heath Hen - Bagheera
The heath hen, a small wild fowl, was a relative of the prairie chicken.
Prior to the American Revolution, the heath hen was found in the eastern United States from Maine to Virginia.
But the heath hen's continued existence as a species would not have been so vulnerable to these occurrences if their populations had not been severely reduced already by human hunting.

The heath hen may, in fact, have been a full species, as determined by contemporary methods and definitions that determine such things, but the point is moot because the heath hen is extinct.
A good dozen heath hens visited a local garden, and somehow that led McLeod and Clark to assume that the population was much larger than appeared to be the case as determined by the good professor's careful estimate based on actual counts.
Clark continued to believe that the heath hen would recover, while Gross had become fatalistic, and was fatigued by his constant battling against Clark, who was soon to leave his influential post as chair of the Heath Hen Committee of the Federation of New England Bird Clubs.

 Vineyard Gazette - News
With the death of the last heath hen on Martha's Vineyard, a whole race of prairie grouse to which it had belonged vanished from the face of the earth.
Now a genetic study of the skins of scores of heath hens, all of them from the Vineyard, shows that the Island bird, although it looked and behaved much like its supposed parent species in the Midwest, was a wholly distinctive creature.
Advocates and critics agree that the state forest, planted on the old heath hen reservation as the bird was dying out, is in need of cutting and burning to revive and restore a native habitat unique in all of New England.

 Vineyard Gazette - Nature
The first purchase of land that became the state forest was in 1908 for a noble cause - to protect and preserve the last remaining population of the heath hen or eastern pinnated grouse.
These funds were used to create firebreaks that would protect the heath hen from the frequent fires that were decimating their population.
From their highest Island population of 200, the number of heath hens decreased until the last lonely hen, Booming Ben, died in 1932.

Fire was a major player in the extinction of the Heath Hen on Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts.
The Heath Hen, an eastern relative of the still extant Greater Prairie Chicken, was so abundant in New England when the colonists arrived in the early 1600s that it was routinely eaten and used as target practice.
Although Massachusetts acted pretty responsibly and mounted a major campaign at the time to save the Heath Hen and set aside a reserve for it on the Vineyard, a major fire begun by a carelessly thrown cigarette swept the reserve on May 12, 1916, the middle of nesting season.

Hough, famed editor of the Vineyard Gazette, recalled naturalist Winthrop Packard’s suggestion that pinkletinks (spring peepers) could have been Ariel; the heath hen, Caliban.
