Heathcliff and The Catillac Cats @ Toonarific Cartoons
Heathcliff may have been a housecat, but with his scruffy pedigree, penchant for trouble and irreverent attitude, he was destined for cartoon fame.
Originally a comic strip created by George Gately in 1973, Heathcliff’s TV debut came in the form of the 1980 weekly Heathcliff and Dingbat.
Everyone worked together in a determined battle against numerous neighborhood adversaries (Spike the bulldog, milkmen, dogcatchers, etc.) Joining Heathcliff in the half hour show were a quirky band of monster pals—Dingbat the vampire dog, Sparerib the skeleton, and Nobody the bodiless pumpkin—who starred in a series of four- and six-minute vignettes.

 What's Heathcliff?
Heathcliff is an orange cat who is always getting into trouble in one way or another and got his cartoon start in 1973 on the funny pages, about five years before Garfield, a similar and more well known cat, did.
The comic strip was created by now-late George Gatley and is still running to this date.
In 1980, Heathcliff got his TV start on ABC in Heathcliff and Dingbat, animated by Ruby-Spears, the same studio that brought such 80s cartoons as Mister T, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Centurions to animated life.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Heathcliff
Comics' first realistically self-centered pet cat protagonist was created by cartoonist George Gately Gallagher, who, to avoid confusion with his older brother John, also a successful cartoonist, dropped his last name in signing his work.
It was Gately's second syndicated comic — the first, The Chicago Tribune Syndicate's Hapless Harry (about a perpetual victim along the lines of H.T. Webster's Caspar Milquetoast or Art Sansom's The Born Loser) didn't make it.
Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats (the latter, again, being the second of two segments) ran 65 episodes, which debuted in syndication during September, 1984.

This is great for little-old-lady-with-her-morning-tea comicstrippery (while the coal-fl spark in her inmost being is fanned, perhaps, into a wan but unrecognized flame) but bad for our hip, ironic, post-postmodern cynical times.
The problem is that the flaw lies not as much in the writing of each individual strip as it does in the underlying concept.

This Heathcliff marathon is not so much a full-length movie as it is a "best of" collection of seven short tales woven together in a continuous story, featuring the vocal talents of the late, legendary Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, et al.).
In one tale, Heathcliff's pop gets parole, although Heathcliff thinks he's escaped; in another, Heathcliff's "good angel" conscience makes a short-lived appeal to his saintly side.

The animated series, which was based on the comic strip, is remembered fondly by the same demographic that is now buying cartoons for their own children.
Created by George Gately, Heathcliff was born as a side character in a little-know comic strip called "Auntie" in the late 1960s, from this he evolved into his very own newspaper comic strip that first ran on September 3, 1973 and was syndicated by McNaught Syndicate.
Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats came in 1984 and ran for 65 episodes.

“Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats”; was a daily ritual for me for a year or two as I prepared to watch “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” after getting home from school.
It was based (loosely) on the George Gately cartoon strip character Heathcliff (voiced by the late, great Mel Blanc… the comic strip Heathcliff never spoke), the scheming cat always getting himself into trouble and constantly trying to impress his girlfriend, Sonja.
Heathcliff also occasionally ran into a Three Stooges-esque group of (much taller) cats, the smart-aleck Hector, the not-so-smart Mungo and the rhyming (rapping?) Wordsworth.
