WINNIPEG – Today in the Legislature, Progressive Conservative Health Critic Heather Stefanson revealed that as of September 30, 2005, the Minister of Health needed to complete an additional 758 pediatric dental surgeries by December 31st to fulfill the promises he made last year.
Stefanson released a Freedom of Information request which showed that as of September 30, 2005, only 317 pediatric dental surgeries had been performed at Misericordia Hospital.
Stefanson noted that the Minister of Health was given an opportunity last year to partner with Maples Surgical Centre to perform pediatric dental surgeries.

Today in the Legislature, Opposition Health Critic Heather Stefanson pressed Health Minister Tim Sale to explain why he has allowed administration costs at the Brandon Regional Health Authority (BRHA) to balloon at a time when the area is experiencing a doctor shortage crisis.
Stefanson noted that the BRHA presently has a number of job openings for physicians and questioned why some of the money presently being spent on administration could not be directed toward recruiting and retaining doctors.
Stefanson added that the Minister of Health should now commit to undertaking a review of regionalization, so that the effectiveness of RHA’s can be examined.

On November 21st, 2000 Heather Stefanson was elected MLA for Tuxedo replacing former Premier Gary Filmon.
Heather’s family has a long standing history in the community — her father Hugh McDonald grew up in one of the first homes built in Tuxedo, and it’s where she and her family now call home.
Heather then went on to work in Ottawa as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Prime Minister.

WINNIPEG – Tory Leader Stuart Murray and Health Critic Heather Stefanson today questioned why the Doer NDP government is refusing to release healthcare data that is supposed to be publicly available.
On September 29th, Stefanson contacted the Access and Privacy Officer for Manitoba Health requesting that a copy of the information in question be forwarded to her office immediately.
On October 12th, Stefanson received a response saying the information had not yet been made available and her request would be reconsidered and responded to in another 30 days.

During today’s Question Period, Health Critic Heather Stefanson called on Health Minister Tim Sale to explain why pediatric dental surgeries at Misericordia Hospital are lagging far behind the 600 he promised to complete by the end of the year.
Stefanson noted that the Health Minister seemed quick to make announcements, and equally quick to pass the blame on to the RHAs whenever targets are not reached.

Official Opposition Leader Stuart Murray and Health Critic Heather Stefanson today continued to press Gary Doer on the misleading comments he made last week to The National Post, and demanded that he clarify his position on the use of private health care providers within Manitoba’s public health care system.
Stefanson noted that the Premier’s acknowledgement that a US clinic had successfully reduced Manitoba’s growing cancer wait list was an endorsement that a public-private partnership could work with Manitoba-based health care providers.
“The Premier has admitted that he is in favour of reducing wait lists by sending patients to private clinics in the US for treatment,” said Stefanson.

He was elected April 29 by party members with a surprisingly large majority, and yesterday his new-look Tory caucus took their seats in the legislature showcasing McFadyen's determination to give the party a younger feel.
The longest serving members and recently ousted leader, Stuart Murray, have been punted to the back row, and the front row is now dominated by younger faces including MLAs Kelvin Goertzen and Heather Stefanson, who both now serve more important roles in the caucus as house leader and party whip respectively.
McFadyen said replacing the old guard with the new is a natural evolution for any party.

Today in Question Period, Official Opposition Leader Stuart Murray and Health Critic Heather Stefanson pressed the NDP government to provide Manitobans living with advanced stages of colorectal cancer with full funding for the treatment drug Avastin.
Since being approved by Health Canada, it has been made available to patients in BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, but is still not available in Manitoba.
“When will the Doer government stop providing second rate health care and put patient health before bureaucracy?” questioned Stefanson.

Tory health critic Heather Stefanson said the NDP government is hypocritical for joining this legal battle.
The New Democrats want money from Big Tobacco and yet are afraid to extend the provincewide smoking ban to workplaces on First Nations, she said.
"How can the NDP condone one aspect of smoking and condemn the other?" Stefanson said.

During that time, the IDA said Wellington West issued client statements indicating Stefanson was a registered representative and paid her on transactions in accounts bearing her name.

As part of the campaign, anti-smoking crusader Heather Crowe spoke to staff and students at the Student Centre Marketplace.
Crowe worked as a waitress for 40 years, and was awarded worker's compensation after being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer related to her exposure to second-hand smoke.
