Heaven   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Heaven is generally construed as a place of eternal happiness.
In the native Chinese Taoist traditions Heaven is an important concept, where the ancestors reside and from which emperors drew their mandate to rule in their dynastic propaganda, for example.
While the concept of Heaven (malkuth shamaim - Kingdom of Heaven) is well-defined within the Christian and Islamic religions, the Jewish concept of the afterlife, sometimes known as "olam haba", the world to come, was never set forth in a systematic or official fashion as was done in Christianity and Islam.

I suspect that my thinking on Australian films is always contaminated by this kind of immediacy, by the films being so close to home, by the feeling of being implicated somehow in their Australian-ness.
The film's re-mapping of Australia as a montage of disparate locations serves both a tourist and an investment imaginary where all destinations are virtual.

With "Heaven" Tykwer has both refined his style and taken his tendency toward almost outrageous implausibility to the extreme with a result that will thrill some and outrage others.
His most recent film, Heaven, is the first he has not written himself, (it was written by Krzystof Kieslowski and Krzystof Piesiewicz) but seems like a revisiting of Warrior, if not virtually a thematic remake.
The two films, in fact, have a great deal in common, though the way they are told is quite different.

Heaven’s Gate is not, as its reputation suggests, the worst Hollywood movie ever made.
Looked at in a certain light it even has some brilliance to it, and at stray moments you can even forget that Michael Cimino’s film is now a three-and-a-half-hour metaphor for the hubris of ego and the dangers of not watching your budget.
The personal and political tensions gather steam until the film’s conclusion, a half-hour bloodbath that features at least half a dozen poor decisions about plot (including one, involving a suicide, that’s completely indefensible).
