Encyclopedia: Kingdom of Heaven (movie)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Kingdom of Heaven is a movie that was released on May 6, 2005, written by William Monahan, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, Edward Norton and Eva Green.
The crowning scene in the movie was, in real life, more of a shock: Sibylla had been forced to divorce Guy before becoming queen, with the assurance that she would be permitted to pick her own consort.
The movie alludes to the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, in which 16-year-old Baldwin IV defeated Saladin, with Saladin narrowly escaping.

Heaven's Gate (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heaven's Gate (1980) is a big-budget western movie, depicting a fictionalized account of the Johnson County War between land barons and European immigrants in 1890s Wyoming.
One of the primary complaints about the film is its soundtrack: even though Cimino uses subtitles for non-English dialogue, some of the English dialogue is obscured by blaring music or sound effects.
The reassembled movie received admiring reviews and coined the term "director's cut." In addition to "Heaven's Gate," the channel premiered the full-length, "director's cut" versions of "Once Upon a Time in America" and Bernardo Bertolucci's five-hour "1900," both also films that bombed after being savagely cut by their studios.

SPLICEDwire | "Heaven" review (2002) Tom Tykwer, Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi
The first of several pivotal scenes in "Heaven" -- a stirring film about guilt, love, retribution and deliverance directed by Tom Tykwer ("Run Lola Run") from the last screenplay by the late Krzysztof Kieslowski ("Red," "White" and "Blue") -- is impossible to watch without your heart jumping into your throat.
The scene is agonizingly potent, and so is the moment a few scenes later when Philippa, blindly accused of terrorism, is told her bomb "cost the lives of four people." Overwhelmed by a 200-ton rush of shock and guilt she collapses, shaking and crying in uncontrollable turmoil.
"Heaven" has a strange story arch that is simple and yet completely unpredictable after quiet, vulnerable, awkward, resourceful (and now haplessly in love) Filippo helps this woman plan the revenge she failed to get with her bombing gone awry.

Kingdom of Heaven (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kingdom of Heaven is a movie that was released on May 6, 2005, written by William Monahan, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Marton Csokas, Brendan Gleeson, Ghassan Massoud, Edward Norton, Michael Sheen and Liam Neeson.
The aftermath of the battle is depicted in the movie: Guy and Reynald were captured, and according to al-Safadi in al-Wafi bi'l-wafayat, Reynald was executed after drinking from the goblet offered to Guy, as the sultan had once made a promise never to give anything to Reynald.
There was a Haute Cour, a "high court", a sort of medieval parliament, in which Jeremy Iron's character Tiberias is seen arguing with Guy for or against war, in front of Baldwin IV as the final judge.

Heaven could definitely have used some of its pacing - as it is, it looks as if Twyker is trying to prove that he can do slower paced films, honest, and has over-compensated as a result.
In short, Heaven is just about worth seeing as a curiosity piece and does at least have a couple of rewarding sequences.

The lack of subtlety results in part from specifying Eleanor's health problem (which is made visible by a close-up shot of the character's scarred chest during a love scene), and from the character's open recognition of her employees' plot of seduction.

Rather Far from Heaven is an interpretation of a memory of what those movies were like--and a snapshot of an America whose sense of the forbidden, as keen as it was unspoken, ritually hovered in the dark between the screen and the nascent nuclear psyche of the movie audience.

However, the movie offers the extremely curious notion that, under the European conquerors of the First Crusade, Jerusalem was a shining, democratic city on a hill -- a kingdom of fair play and amicable relations between the differing faiths.
Thus the back half of the movie is one titanic battle after another, the details of which had the historically minded critic in the row next to me cringing in agony.
In the end, though, the movie's well-intentioned message of peace and good will seems absurdly naive the moment you leave the theater and pick up a newspaper.

Director Todd Haynes has created something unusual and gorgeous with “Far >From Heaven.” An experiment in direct homage to the Douglas Sirk (“All That Heaven Allows”) melodramas of the 1950s, Haynes’s film is so enveloped in period detail and technique, that one could be fooled into thinking this was an actual picture from the era.
Haynes’s affection for the genre is evident in every frame, from the lush Technicolor-like palettes to the overwhelming emotional demands made on each character, the careful editing and slow dissolves, and Elmer Bernstein’s ripe and pitch-perfect score.

Taken pretty much chapter and verse form his book, “In the Eye of the Storm,” The Other Side of Heaven is far from the worst LDS themed films I’ve seen, and though rarely compelling, I found it nonetheless mildly enjoyable.
The movie begins with his mission call and ends at his Homecoming and temple marriage and at the end of it all, I didn’t feel like I’d learned anything about Groberg that wasn’t evident in the first few scenes.

Each movie has re-imagined history from a modern, let's-keep-an-open-mind perspective and hewed to a shopworn formula in which the hero rallies his men against great odds and for a greater good.
But peace is not meant to be, and in the picture's third act director Ridley Scott (who also helmed "Gladiator") delves into battle scenes, leading to the climactic siege and Balian's severely out-manned defense, not of Jerusalem's walls (he knows he'll have to surrender the city eventually) but of its diverse and neutral people.
The movie's problem is in finding enough of a pulse to keep that world interesting.

A subsequent review in The New York Times called Heaven's Gate "an unqualified disaster," comparing it to "a forced four-hour walking tour of one's own living room." It surfaced six months later with 70 minutes cut by the studio in a desperate attempt to recoup some of its losses, but to no avail.
The movie's unprecedented US$40 million cost literally sent United Artists into bankruptcy and eventually led to its purchase by MGM.
This trend was already ending by the early 1980s, but Heaven's Gate is viewed by many as its definitive end.

Far from Heaven Movie Review at Hollywood Video
In Far from Heaven, his first film since 1998's Velvet Goldmine, director Todd Haynes pays homage to Sirk with an unforgettable melodrama that gloriously evokes the era while commenting on the time's racial and sexual attitudes.
His affection for the era is evident in the care with which he re-creates its details, beginning with the title sequence that evokes memories of melodramas of days gone by and using obvious matte shots whenver Cathy gets behind the wheel.
Far From Heaven is the type of movie one can watch a dozen times over, gleaning something new from each viewing—not as regards story depth, but in terms of how carefully the film is constructed.

OFFOFFOFF film review FAR FROM HEAVEN movie by Todd Haynes with Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia ...
The only problem with all of this is that "Far from Heaven" feels like an intellectual exercise (and a disconcerting one at that) rather than a film you can truly sink your teeth into (although applause appears to be commonplace at screenings, and more than one critic has already dubbed Haynes's film "a masterpiece").
It's a time capsule of a movie that doesn't really fit any latter-day mold (other than a blow-by-blow redo of a vintage romantic drama in that Douglas Sirk vein — "All That Heaven Allows," "Imitation of Life," "Magnificent Obsession").
Deliberately and devotedly constructed, "Far from Heaven" is too picture-postcard perfect, too neat and new pin-like, too obviously a recreation to resonate (at least with this poor unfortunate).
