The Jujube Spotlight - Heaven Can Wait (1978)
It pains me to say it, but I have a feeling that if I discovered "Heaven Can Wait" only this year, I would write it off, on the whole, as too discomfiting and absurd.
Indeed, "Heaven Can Wait" uses some pretty heavy themes in the service of comedy, and sometimes the combination doesn't sit well.
Yet if one can simply absorb the story without thinking about it too much, the appeal of the actors works its magic, making the premise droll, the punchlines funny, and the ending as happy as can be expected for a man who (nearly) meets his maker before his time is up.

Heaven Can Wait (1943)- Moria The Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Review
The film is certainly remarkable in its creation of sympathy for what should otherwise be seen as a wholly unlikable character – a rampant womanizer, a liar, a cheat and an adulterer.
One can see that the play has it over the film – each act of the play is set around one of the character’s titular birthdays.
But in the film, without the dramatic cut-and-close effect of having a curtain come down to physically close each scene, the basic concept is lost and is even further diluted by the film’s somewhat meaningless title change.

The film and play was further remade as Down to Earth(2001) with actor Chris Rock where it was given a racial twist and became a film about a Black man being incarnated in a white man’s body.
None of the gaping holes in the original are patched up either – one still asks why Farnsworth’s body can be resurrected from the dead when Joe’s cannot.
And the inherent wrongness in Heaven’s failure to alert Joe to the tragic end that Farnsworth faces still glares.

Though there are some very funny things in it, its glib message about being oneself turns out to be a cover for being self-indulgent, in the style (I’m afraid) of so many younger artists these days.
Part of the point of putting the hero in that all-male context in the earlier films was to point the contrast between his masculine striving, and failure, in a public and competitive arena and the love, associated with the private and the feminine, that sustains him through it—and, ultimately, through death itself.
