Vangelis was born in Volos, in Greece on the 29th of March 1943 as Evangelos Papathanassiou.
Vangelis remained in Paris for a while, recording a couple of film soundtracks for the French director Frederic Rossif (among these L'Apocalypse Des Animaux and La Fete Sauvage) and giving an amazing performance at the "Olympia" to promote his first solo album, Earth, on the Philips label.
Although "Heaven and Hell" was Vangelis' breakthrough, some of his most famous melodies are featured on this album, which also has one of the most famous covers ever released.

Vangelis is a modern day musical genius and he has proved time and time again through various works (not always the more commercial ones either) that the musical heroes of yesteryear are still alive and well and continue with his music today.
As I recorded this album in a cassette 3 days before a heavy earthquake happened in Mexico City in September 1985, this album is a bit related in memories to that sad event.
Despite being a rather obvious concept, Vangelis’ musical rendition of heaven and hell is unique, despite owing a large debt to classical composers such as Mussorgsky, Wanger, Holst and anyone else who attempted to orchestrate armageddon.

Vangelis has always struck me as somebody whose music could be sublime and sophisticated one minute and banal and insipid the next.
Unlike Oldfield, though, Vangelis is not a virtuosic multi-instrumentalist, so aside from some time on percussion, he restricts himself to keyboards while using various vocalists and choirs when needed.
A personal favorite, Heaven and Hell musically covers a lot of territory, and though no themes are repeated across the tracks, the overall vision remains very coherent to the end.

Be sure not to confuse this album with a boxed set of 3 of Vangelis' albums from the same RCA era.
A new version of the album was rereleased a few years after, with a totally different cover, that more resembles the style of the artwork of previous J&V releases, most notably the Private Collection series (albums and singles).
Actually, the Vangelis LP isn't really a compilation as most of the albums from this series were, but it's the Earth LP repackaged with an extensive booklet, texts in Italian and a number of never before seen pictures from the 70s and 80s.

The collection albums do not necessarily have the exact same versions that are included on the album or 12" releases.
The CD liner notes for Odes have the lyrics in French, although the album is sung in Greek by Irene.
Vangelis produced 2 brilliant albums, "See You Later" & "Soil Festivities", both eccentric as hell, a couple of _weird_ ones ("Invisible Connections" and "Beaubourg"), a few reasonable ones ("Albedo 0.39, Spiral, Earth...) and a lot of overbearing dross (anything with the words "Jon Anderson" on the back :-)).

At first listen, the concept behind this album is difficult to grasp since most of Vangelis' works have little to do with social commentary or global issues.
Also, this album is a transition into new territory with hints of jazz and electro-funk.

Inevitably one mentions Enigma when tolling bells and chanting monks are featured but the Vangelis album 'Heaven and Hell' also springs to mind even if the styles are different the concept is familiar.
Like Vangelis, Software are no slouches when it comes to knocking together a few good tunes and the atmosphere is maintained successfully throughout the set.

I'm not sure if Vangelis wanted this album to be representation of heaven and hell, but it turned out to be that way.
It is a significant album because this was the first album made in Vangelis' Nemo Studios in London and the first Vangelis album released under the RCA label
It seems to be a favorite of Vangelis (or his record labels) because it seems to make its way into compliation albums.
