		In the late 19th century, when what we now call Oklahoma was still Indian Territory, several people noticed this large stone (12 feet high, 10 feet wide, 16 inches thick) on top of Poteau Mountain (at whose base present-day Heavener sits) on which were carved eight definitely non-Latin-alphabet symbols.
		In the 1920s a Heavener resident sent a query and a copy of the symbols to the Smithsonian.
		Farley searched, researched, interviewed, and wrote extensively about what she came to call "the Heavener Runestone." So infectious was her enthusiasm that local property owners donated land leading up the mountain and the site itself to the state of Oklahoma.

		The grave of La Salle expedition drowning victim, Petit Jean De Marne (Marle), is at the East end of Petit Jean mountain of Arkansas, and became the basis for Arkansas legends of Petit Jean.
		Oklahoma La Salle discoveries convinced Dr. Lee Woodard that on St. Jeans Day, June 24, 1687, the seven fleeing French survivors of the La Salle expedition were at what is now known as Petit Jean Mountain of Arkansas.
		He had moved to Heavener, OK, home of "The Runestone," a huge slab of stone upon which is a carved an old and obsolete alphabetic script, about which there had been much controversy and uncertainty.
