By early 1864 Imperial control in most areas was well established, Hong declared that God would defend Tianjing, but as the Imperial forces approached in June he took poison.
But Hong Tianguifu did nothing to restore the Kingdom, so the Kingdom was quickly destroyed when Nanjing fell to the Imperial armies after vicious street-by-street fighting.

God's Chinese Son is not a history of the Taiping rebellion, and the author disclaims any desire to do what others have done (although it's fair to say we have no history of the rebellion that combines both the readability and historical accuracy Spence brings to his task).
Hong and his Taipings have always had a special fascination for Westerners, in large part because of the Protestant influence on the rebellion and its leaders, and some have even suggested that, if the Taipings had triumphed, China would have been Christianized.
For the next eleven years the Taipings sought to establish the heavenly kingdom in Nanjing, and to extend their sway over the lower Yangtze Valley.

Yet there are major gaps in the story too: the perspective of the Qing dynasty and how it was able to turn back the Taiping threat, the successes and failures of the Taiping social and economic program, and the rebellion's impact on culture and politics in China are all nearly completely absent from the story.
Ultimately the lack of attention to these issues left me dissatisfied with the book, even if Spence warns the reader from the beginning that he is not writing comprehensively.
Spence's decision to forego analysis and evaluation in favor of straightforward narrative was also disappointing since the Taiping rebellion offers such fertile ground for interpretive work.
