Heavy Metal achieved a dubious "cult classic" status partly by complete accident, because it was unavailable on video for almost twenty years due to Columbia being unable to secure the rights to the songs on the soundtrack.
Heavy Metal may be frustrating and often very much a guilty pleasure, but at least it is what it is without apologies or freakin' moralizing at the end, and that's one of the biggest reasons why I like it so much.
Don't gimme any shit about the integrity of the movie; like I said, this should've been BOC from beginning til end, and when songs are placed in a movie the way they are here, it has nothing to do with the integrity of the movie and everything to do with making money on the soundtrack.

Currently editor of the sci-fi/sword and sorcery magazine Heavy Metal, Eastman decided way back in 1994 to make a follow-up to the 1981 cult classic of the same name, which has more than stood the test of time.
A showdown in a sleazy spaceport was the highpoint of the movie for me. The deep space graphics were really badass and reminded me a lot of Titan A.E., mixing CGI and traditional cell animation.
By basically turning Tarrna into a full length movie (there's even a very cool homage to the famous naked swimming scene in the temple), the writer's have eliminated much (nearly all) of the trademark humor that was in the original.

Over the years, the cult for “Heavy Metal” has grown, resulting in years of midnight movie screenings and a failed attempt at a sequel in 2000 that didn’t even come close in capturing the spirit of the first film.
“Heavy Metal” is an acquired taste, but it is an original, thus deserving of at least one viewing for the uninitiated.

This animated movie based on the comics of the same title is fun once you accept it on its own terms, i.e., brainless and adolescent.
Heavy Metal should obviously be seen on the big screen with a great sound system since it is basically a series of animated graphic fantasies set to hard rock music.
Heavy Metal was followed by a largely pointless and inferior sequel 19 years later which eschewed the fragmentary approach of telling several stories and settled for only one instead.

I like this 1981 version of the movie Heavy Metal, although a few stories didn't live up to the level of the magazine content..or were not presented as such.
When I read a few stories in the adult magazines Heavy Metal from the late 70's to the early 90's, both American and French versions, the women in the majority of the stories, although drawn by European men and set in uncertain futures, wear...and in many cases...don't wear at all...

The movie: this is a collection of animated shorts with a loose tie-in about a glowing orb that is “the sum of all evil”.
One of the things that made this movie such a hit when it came out, besides the beautiful cartoon women and the wide availability of alcohol to teenagers, was the choice of music on the soundtrack.
It is played over the movie itself, so you can watch the movie while listening to the book, but it isn’t a scene-by-scene commentary, at least not that matches what’s being read with what’s on screen.

I have wanted to see this movie since I saw the trailer for it when I was 9 years old, and when I found out that Columbia Pictures was releasing a "louder and nastier" version, complete with digital sound and a new print, nothing was stopping me this time.
The movie has in some ways set the standard for later Japanimation (aka Anime), and has gained a cult following over the years.

Typical of the imagination and energy in this movie, "Soft Landing" shows the space shuttle in orbit; its cargo bay slowly opens to release a 1960 Corvette Roadster, piloted by a space-suited astronaut.
The people in the city are helpless before the attack; passive and meek, they are slain in an orgy of carnage.
One of the interesting things I've heard about the movie was some of the animators were former Disney cartoonists, and when they were given the chance to draw naked women, etc., they were unstoppable.

At the time, metal was all like Blue Oyster Cult and Sammy Hagar, but per the name it's Heavy Metal 2000 and today's metal is just what's served.
