Weather Report also anticipated and contributed to the North American interest in world music rhythms and structures, prodded by keyboardist/co-founder Joe Zawinul.
The best-selling Heavy Weather album (1977) actually served up a hit song that became a jazz standard ("Birdland"), and with the entry of Peter Erskine on drums (1978), the group finally had a stable lineup for awhile.
Contrary to accepted wisdom, the departures of Pastorius and Erskine in 1982 led to a recharging of WR's batteries; their replacements Victor Bailey (bass), Omar Hakim (drums), Jose Rossy and later, Mino Cinelu (percussion) were more amenable to Zawinul's deepening inclinations for Third World rhythms, sounds and textures.

This is their second album, although two of the band's members, Greg Arnold (singing, bass, guitars and keyboards) and Greg Williams (singing, rhythm guitar) did record an album as the Every Brothers between the first album (simply titled 'Splurge' in 1999) and this latest offering.
With 'Heavy Weather' Splurge have produced an album full of such wonderfully melodic pop songs that it can only be a matter of time before they are much more well known.
As the album progresses through songs like the acoustic driven 'Because You're Mine', it's obvious that this is a classy act who have produced an album which, like all great albums, has snatches of tunes which already seem familiar and vocals which the listener feels instantly comfortable with.

Weather Report, as most readers already know, was a successful jazz fusion band that featured (most notably) Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius - still considered to be masters of their craft.
Heavy Weather is one of Weather Report's most highly acclaimed albums, and it features three of their most famous songs - these being "Birdland", "A Remark You Made", and "Teen Town."
The album continues to impress, with the third track: "Teen Town." A Jaco composition, the song features Pastorius on bass and drums as he molds a jazzy groove that would help define him as a pioneer of the electric bass in years to come.

Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" is the best album to come out of the jazz fusion genre of the mid 1970's (with the possible exception of Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters").
"Heavy Weather" proved that a pop/dance album could be completely instrumental, full of improvised solos based on jazz idioms, and feature every member of the group interacting in a dynamic fashion.

But about this time in Weather Report's career, 1980, co-leaders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter were starting to exhaust their creativity within the colorful, funky, world-music styles that had characterized their previous album and the classic sound of the 70s.
Weather Report had always been jazz in its approach and the mentality of the musicians, but this album was the first since "I Sing the Body Electric" in 1972 in which they were predominantly jazz in the stylistic sense.
Otherwise the whole album is in fact recorded live, but in a studio; throughout the recording process of this album there was an audience of approximately 250 people to give the band a boost of adrenaline in their performance, and indeed - this way they seem to have gotten the power they were seeking for.

For some reason I expected a lot from this album, and as someone said, it seems to be one of those albums that everyone says is good and essencial but isn't really.
When I first listened to this album, I was already aware of how cheesy opening track 'Birdland' is, and the entire album does have a somewhat cheesy sound, due particularly to Zawinul's then revolutionary, now dated, synthesizers and Jaco's brilliant but dated sounding fretless bass technique.
On Heavy Weather, Jaco showed pretty much everything he had, from the pyrotechnics of "Teen Town", through the lyricism of "Harlequin" and "The Juggler", and finally to Jaco's own tune "Havona".

Over the years, Weather Report has gone through a multitude of personnel changes that have also made this group live up to its name in that respect as well.
Birdland is the obvious “hit” on the album, but songs like A Remark You Made with Shorter’s melancholy saxophone and Zawinul’s keyboard flourishes demonstrate the depth and emotional expressiveness this jazz group can muster up.
