Heavy bomber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A heavy bomber is a bomber aircraft of the largest size, and typically longest ranges.
The heavy bomber was generally considered to be any design that delivered 8,000 lb (4 t) of bombs or more on distant targets, with medium bombers having loads of 4,000 to 8,000 lb (2 to 4 t), and light bombers 2,000 to 4,000 lb (1 to 2 t).
The general utility of a manned heavy bomber has been greatly degraded with the introduction of more accurate munitions such as smart bombs, but the B-52 continues to fill a role when the target requires a massive number of bombs to be dropped.

Our heavy bombers possess the characteristics of speed, long-range, and large payloads which are well suited to provide an immediate response to hostile action by some ill-meaning despot.

The unique capability our heavy bombers possess significantly add to our nation's potential to conduct conventional operations successfully and technological advances must be pursued to insure this much needed capability is preserved.
With most of our bomber training focused on a nuclear war against the former Soviet Union, Korea was not seen by SAC as one for their major concerns.
When our bombers were called to perform direct support missions just prior to the ground war, "strategic" bombers concentrated their conventional power on the elite Republican Guard, breaking their will to fight.

Paragraph 12 of Article IV specifies that the purpose of such exhibitions is to demonstrate to the other Party the specified differences between such reoriented bombers and other heavy bombers of the same type or variant of a type with a nuclear role.
Providing observable differences between heavy bombers returned to a nuclear role and those of the same type and variant that were never reoriented to a conventional role helps enforce the prohibition of paragraph 9 of Article IV against subsequently reorienting to a conventional role any heavy bomber returned to a nuclear role.

A key to the success of the American daytime strategic bombing campaign against Germany was the evolving bomber formation called the "combat box." Designed to maximize defensive firepower and concentrate the group's bomb load, variations of the combat box included 18, 27, 36, or 54 heavy bombers.
For Allied fighter pilots, the job of escorting the bombers to and from the target was an evolving task as the formations, enemy tactics, and the escort fighters' combat range changed over time.
When attacking bombers from behind, the idea was to concentrate the attack by hurling one four-plane Schwarm after another at the target aircraft, quickly firing and then flying over the formation.

 Ukraine: Bomber Decommissioning/Transfer Developments
Eleven heavy bombers (three Tu-95MSs and eight Tu-160s) and 581 Kh-55 ALCMs were transferred to Russia in exchange for $285 million in natural gas debt in 2000.[1,2] Two bombers (one Tu-95MS and one Tu-160) were sent to a museum in Poltava, and two Tu-95 MS bombers were converted for environmental reconnaissance missions.[3]
The decision to dismantle the bombers may have been influenced by US reminders that aid for bomber dismantlement would be halted if the bombers were transferred.[2] For more information on US foreign assistance to Ukraine, see the 8/7/2000 entry in the CTR Developments in Ukraine section.
The transfer of the strategic bombers from Ukraine to Russia is part of a gas debt settlement.[3] While Ukraine had originally wanted $75 million for each bomber, the final agreement values each bomber at $25 million and the missiles at $10 million, for a total reduction of Ukraine's gas debt by $285 million.

The thesis of this research is that the concern for heavy bomber production should not be limited to just maintaining the critical skills and capabilities necessary to produce these aircraft, but rather should increase in scope to examine the practical feasibility of procuring bombers in the future at acceptable costs and within required timelines.
If the present bomber production capability is allowed to drawdown without a comprehensive consideration for future defense needs, tomorrow's inevitable bomber production requirements will severely feel this oversight in terms of money and time.
Chapter 1 reviews the nation's needs for heavy bombers, discusses three reasons which may determine the need for additional bombers in the future, examines the bomber industrial base in terms of the broader aerospace industry, and defines the B-2 bomber's present curtailment status and production activities.
