Cattle (often called cows in vernacular and contemporary usage, or kye as the Scots plural of cou) are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily Bovinae of the family Bovidae.
Cattle are ruminants, meaning that they have a digestive system that allows them to utilize otherwise undigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as "cud." The cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialized microorganisms that live in the rumen.
Cattle are often raised by allowing herds to graze on the grasses of large tracts of rangeland called ranches.

In cattle terminology, the word "cow" refers to an adult female (or more specifically, a female who has given birth), as opposed to a heifer (young female), steer (castrated male), or bull (intact male).
All domesticated cattle evolved from aurochs, ancient long-horned oxen that stood six feet at the shoulder and had roughly half the mass of a rhinoceros.
Seeing horns other than on isolated bulls is unusual because of the common practice in modern cattle management of debudding calves at or shortly after birth (that is, removing the immature base, or horn bud, before an actual horn develops).

As the contact structure of the Heck cattle populations may influence BHV1 transmission and thus also BHV1 persistence, this contact structure was quantified using behaviour observations.
From the serological data and simulations results it was clear that vaccination of a large part of the Heck cattle population decreased the seroprevalence for BHV1.
However, this does not necessarily imply that, for the eradication of BHV1 in domestic cattle, eradication of BHV1 in the Heck cattle populations is necessary.

Jack's "Bugs in the News" - What the Heck is Mad Cow Disease?
The syndrome presently affecting many of the cattle in the British Isles, "Mad Cow" disease, is a normally extremely rare neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system of the animal.
The reason for the linkage is that the disease the cattle were diagnosed as having appeared strikingly similar to that of the disease in sheep known as scrapie.
While cattle had not before been observed with this disorder - at least to the extent of such numbers within a herd which would lead to such investigation or reporting of symptoms - sheep had long been known to somehow acquire this disease - even though the disease is extremely rare among sheep.
