The summons to Hecker from the revolutionary government in Karlsruhe on 16 May 1849 (b.1, f.10), and his mandate of election to the Assembly in June of the same year (b.1, f.5, 7.6.1849) are unique historical artifacts of the last forelorn rising of the Left in Baden.
Weigel was a friend of Hecker's and served in the 82nd Illinois (leaving a mass of routine papers and one remarkable letter on the battle of Gettysburg), but after the war he served as Director of the US Census of 1890 in St. Louis and Director of Parks for the City of St. Louis.

The 82nd Illinois (also known as the Second Hecker Regiment, after its original colonel, Frederick Hecker) was mustered into service at Camp Springfield, IL on October 23, 1862.
The Lieutenant Colonel, later commander of the regiment and brevet Brigadier-General, was also Jewish, Edward Selig Salomon.Hecker and Salomon had previously served together earlier in the war in the 24th Illinois Infantry.
Col. Hecker was wounded at this battle, and Salomon became the regimental commander.

Mueller, an idealist and severe critic of himself, his colleagues, and his times mustered out with the regiment in the summer of 1865, married Colonel Frederick Hecker's daughter, scraped out a living as a merchant, and shot himself in the head in Minneapolis just before the turn of the century.
The 82nd Illinois was one of the only so-called "German" regiments that fought in the ill-fated 11th Corps of the Army of the Potomac to remain an intact fighting unit after its transfer to the Western Theater.
Its second colonel (after the wounding and retirement of the German revolutionary Frederick Hecker) was Edward Selig Salomon, who was to end the war a Brevet Brigadier and go on to become Governor of Washington Territory, District Attorney of San Francisco and Member of the California State Legislature.
