Hecksher State Park is a park on the shore of the Great South Bay at East Islip in Suffolk County, New York.
The park was 1,469 acres that was once the 19th century estate of George C. Taylor.
The park was donated to the State of New York by the affluent August Heckscher who is believed to purchase it from the Taylor family.

 Heckscher State Parkway
The Heckscher State Parkway is the eastern extension of the Southern State Parkway and continues its exit numbering scheme.
In 1977, maintenance of the Heckscher State Parkway was transferred from the Long Island State Park Commission (LISPC) to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), although ownership remained under the jurisdiction of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP).

 Long Island New York State Parks
The park serves as the northern trailhead of the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail that extends to Bethpage State Park and eventually the south shore of Nassau County.
The park, named for its open, rolling geography and the shadbush that grows there, also has bluffs, freshwater wetlands that are part of the preserve, hiking trails and elevated platforms for birdwatching and enjoying the shoreline views.
Trail View is a 400-acre, 7.4-mile linear park that serves as a link along the Nassau/Suffolk Greenbelt Trail that extends from Cold Spring Harbor State Park on the north shore of Suffolk County to Bethpage State Park, and eventually to the south shore of Nassau County.

It is about a half mile hike, or park outside of the park @ N40.42.980 W073 09.350 which is the intersection of Woodhollow Road and Timber Point Road.
We parked in the wrong lot and had to bushwack a bit but the walk back was easier.
It is really a nice park and we had a good time geocacheing despite the ticks.

Before East Islip got its name in 1890, the area was referred to simply as "east of Islip." It was part of the original 51,000-acre purchase from the Secatogue Indians by Islip founder William Nicoll.
Philanthropist August Heckscher donated $262,000 toward the purchase of the Great South Bay estate of George C. Taylor, a wealthy eccentric who died in 1908.
During a hearing, then-Democratic Gov. Al Smith heard a millionaire express fear the park would be "overrun with rabble from the city." Smith retorted, "Why, that's me," and signed some key papers enabling the creation of the park.

Anyone make the journey through New york City with a fifth wheel to this park, Heckscher State Park, NY I'm from Brantford, Ont. Canada and wondering....
If you come down the NY State Thruway, a suggestion is to get off at 84 east and take the Beacon Newburgh Bridge.
Smithpoint is another difficult one to get into during summer months as both of these parks are on the beach.
