Hectograph products and process - Patent 4042401
Thixotropic semi-solid hectograph printing ink which is substantially free of dissolved hectograph coloring matter comprising from about 30% to 80% by weight of a liquid vehicle consisting of at least one volatile organic liquid vehicle having a boiling point between about 200.degree.
The most conventional hectograph compositions are applied as hot-melt wax compositions or resinous solvent compositions to form pressure-sensitive hectograph transfer sheets carrying a layer of wax and/or resin composition containing undissolved hectograph dyestuff which is transferable in image form to a master sheet under the effects of writing or typing pressure.
The present thixotropic hectograph ink compositions are unique with respect to their resistance to forming dye-containing halos on the master sheet due to the fact that the fused images are substantially free of dissolved dye and of flowable oils.

The hectograph or gelatin duplicator or jellygraph is a printing process which involves transfer of an original, prepared with special inks, to a pan of gelatin or a gelatin pad pulled tight on a metal frame.
At least eight different colors of hectographic ink were available at one time, but purple was the most popular because of its density and contrast.
However, it also was used in professional situations; in Macy's advertising department during the 1950s and 1960s, full-page newspaper ad layouts were duplicated on a hectograph to make file copies for future reference.

The 19th century found tattooists using hectograph ink and later hectograph pencils along with rice paper for their design transfer.
Sometimes, to get around the single use problem, hectograph ink would be applied to a very light canvas or heavier paper so it could be re-inked and used over and over.
By the mid-1800s chemists around the world were perfecting plastics and by the turn of the century, cellulose or celluloid (plastic) stencils were in almost every tattoo shop in the industrialized world.

The Hectographic or "gelatin" duplicator, according to one source, "originally applied to a process which involved transferring the material to be copied from a sheet upon which it had been written with a special ink to a pad made from a mixture of gelatin, glycerin, and sometimes glue."(Doss, 1955, p.
It was invented in 1923 by one Wilhelm Ritzerfeld, founder of the Ormig Company in Germany (Proudfoot 1972, 36).
The spirit duplicator master consisted of a smooth paper master sheet and a "carbon" paper sheet (coated with a waxy compound similar to that used in the hectograph) acting "backwards" so that the wax compound (we'll call it the "ink") was transferred to the back side of the master sheet itself.
