 DNZB / BIOGRAPHY
Hector was educated in Edinburgh, graduating in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1856, having taken lectures in botany and zoology, and apparently having gained some training in geology.
Hector worked strenuously in the field during the summer with such of his staff as could be spared, together with temporary assistants.
Hector was the only scientist of standing in government service, so it was not surprising that other small scientific and quasi-scientific bodies, established in response to the needs of a developing country reliant on its natural resources, were placed under his control.

Monro, who was not aware of the parallel which I had drawn between the Homeric and Icelandic houses, accepted it on evidence more recent than that of Sir George Dasent.
Monro reasons, and as Blass states the case bluntly, "Solon, or Pisistratus, or whoever it was, put a stop, at least as far as Athens was concerned, to the mangling of Homer" by the rhapsodists or reciters, each anxious to choose a pet passage, and not going through the whole _Iliad_ in due sequence.

HECTOR, Sir James - 1966 Encyclopaedia of New Zealand
James Hector was born in Edinburgh on 16 March 1834, the son of Alexander Hector, conveyancer and Writer to the Signet.
During the heroic phase of his life, Hector was shy and self-conscious, “averse to premature conclusions only partly unfolded”, and his reports on the Otago survey are but brief commentary on the achievement represented by his unpublished geological map.
Hector became Director of the Colonial Museum and Geological Survey and Manager of the Institute, and was recognised as the adviser of the Government on scientific matters of all kinds.

 Otago Philosophy - History
Hector Monro, who was also lecturer in those days, published his book, The Argument of Laughter, in 1951.
Since Monro’s subsequent books, (some written while he was a Professor at Monash) are often quite amusing, the lack of laughs was possibly due to the fact that he wrote it, in part, to keep up his spirits whilst doing time as a conscientious objector during the War.
Like his friend Hector Monro, he had been imprisoned during the War as a conscientious objector and, again like Hector Monro, he had a strong interest in the British Moralists.

For now though, I'm thinking about novels and stories I've recently read that you may not have heard of, and hopefully no one will have studied ad nauseum in some dusty classroom.
Which brings me pleasantly onto the collected short stories of Hector Hugh Monro (aka Saki, a name seemingly derived from the cupbearer in The Rubayat by Omar Khayyam) an Edwardian satirist remarkable for the curiously macabre nature of his stories and his almost complete contempt for British society and, to be frank, British people.
Born in Burma (now Myanmar, but to me it will always be Burma) in 1870, Munro's father was an inspector-general in the Burmese police, his mother was tragically killed by a runaway cow in an English country lane.
