The drawings are traditionally 18 by 31 Picas (roughly 3" by 5"), and use the stipple method of many small dots to create an image.
The Wall Street Journal first began using hedcuts in 1979 when freelance artist Kevin Sprouls approached the paper with some ink dot illustrations he'd created.
In 2002, the Smithsonian Institute acquired 66 original hedcut drawings and have put them on permanent display in the National Portrait Gallery.

Hedcuts are working drawings of approximately three by five inches (or exactly 18 x 31 picas-a typographical unit), intended for reproduction at one-third scale.
The original stipple hedcut drawings are frequently annotated with the initials of the artist and the date of its execution, which makes it possible to compare the hands of different artists.
Although the date of execution is often noted on the finished hedcut drawing, it does not necessarily correspond to the drawing's publication.
