The researcher used regression analysis to assess the impact of each hypothesized causal factor on between city differences in 1989 homelessness rates for the 147 primary cities in the data set (excluding suburbs) and for subgroup breakouts based on level of manufacturing employment and population growth from 1980 to 1986.
Regression analysis is used to identify relationships between election results and the socioeconomic characteristics of candidates as well as the electorate in urban neighborhoods.
Regression based decomposition analysis found that a substantial portion of the racial wage gap was due to discrimination (unequal pay) while estimates of the magnitude of labor market discrimination indicated considerable variation by geographical area.

Survey of Current Business: The economic interpretation of hedonic methods - discussion of new price index for ...
The heart of the methodology is a regression equation, referred to as the "hedonic function," in which prices from an array of different models, or varieties, of a product are the dependent variable and the characteristics of that product are the independent, or explanatory, variables.
Hedonic methods were developed, and indeed used in price indexes, long before their conceptual framework was understood.
At one time, hedonic methods were regarded as ad hoc adjustments, which could not be related to the conceptual basis for economic measurement nor to the theory of price index numbers and real output measurement.

Therefore, all regressions will embrace the three main characteristics of computers, CPU, RAM, and HD and the characteristic of the processor is also included in the regressions as a dummy variable.
Since the variables have been inserted into the regression model in a logarithm form, the coefficients are indicative of proportional elasticity or sensitivity of the dependent variable to the changes in either of the independent variables.
By calculating the hedonic price index of the desktop personal computers it is observed that the index has had a decreasing trend so that it has declined continuously from 100 in 1999 to 68 in 2002.

 Hedonic Pricing Method
The hedonic pricing method is most often used to value environmental amenities that affect the price of residential properties.
The hedonic value function can be used to determine the benefits of preserving each parcel, which can then be compared to the cost.
The data are analyzed using regression analysis, which relates the price of the property to its characteristics and the environmental characteristic(s) of interest.

 NAP Skim View of:
HEDONIC REGRESSION METHODS Hedonics currently offers the most promising technique for explicitly adjusting observed prices to account for changing product quality.14 Hedonic regressions are used to estimate the value of specific bundles of individual characteristics that, when packaged together, form goods.
The principle underlying hedonics is that, if consumers face observable relationships between goods’ characteristics and their prices, one should be able to use these relationships to disentangle pure price changes from quality changes.
Hedonic functions are typically refit only periodically, so neither the current period nor the prior period function is usually available.

As noted in the discussion of the hedonic regression model, all property characteristics have to be taken into account to guarantee accuracy.
In contrast to the hedonic regression and the mix-adjustment methods, which use large numbers of property characteristics, the repeat sales model observes the price development of a specific house over a period of time.
The hedonic model is based on seven main effects, namely location (local authority district), cluster (an ONS classification of local authorities), dwelling type, type of neighbourhood (ACORN), number of rooms, whether the property is old or new, and whether the buyer is a former owner-occupier or a first-time buyer.

 Abstract - 4th Sensometrics Meeting 1998
Multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) suffers due to issues of multicollinearity and a requirement that the number of independent observations outnumbers the number of parameters to be estimated.
Utilities (individual regression coefficients multiplied by mean PC scores on products) are then plotted in two-dimensional maps to evaluate the relative strength of the principal components to drive consumer hedonics for individual respondents and products.
In these situations, the predictive capabilities of the regression model estimated by the PLS algorithm can be utilized to predict optimal or directional sensory characteristics that could result in improved hedonic ratings.

 FREC 444--9: Related-Market Valuation
For example, housing is a composite good, and housing prices or rents (P) can be decomposed via regression analysis to identify implicit prices for the various attributes X and Q (bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage, age of house, etc., as well as local environmental quality attributes).
This means that the marginal implicit price function derived from a hedonic regression on diverse neighborhoods is really the "envelope" of a series of equilibria in distinct housing markets, and the actual demands for Q will be different in each market.
In this case a hedonic analysis of market values would probably understate the current costs of the pollution, while a hedonic analysis of current rents would not.

It is argued that when log-linear hedonic functions are used the effects of quality change should be evaluated using a method akin to the Oaxaca decomposition (Oaxaca R., 1973, "Male-Female Wage Differentials in Urban Labor Markets", International Economic Review, 14, 693-709), rather than using the traditional dummy variables method.
The results of the empirical part of the paper indicate that the CPI component corresponding to the sales of new passenger cars may have been overestimated by as much as 2.2 percentage points per year.

This definition was applied to estimate the non-timber value (NTV) of Forest Inventory and Analysis plots in the Wisconsin maple-birch forest type, with a Markov decision model to predict the decision that would have maximized the timber income.
Then hedonic regression was applied to determine how the biophysical characteristics of stands and the socioeconomic setting influenced NTV.
The hedonic pricing model showed that stands with the same tree distribution had significantly higher NTVs for national forests, and similar NTVs for other ownership types.

Hedonic techniques are better suited to contend with index number problems per se, as they can accommodate changing attribute prices over time.
Drawbacks of the hedonic approach include the usual concern with omitted attributes, and their effect on the estimated price index.

For instance, if a computer operated at 50mhz seven years ago, and 1000mhz today, the BLS would claim the price of the computer today reflects much higher quality, so the price must be adjusted downwards dramatically to account for quality.
The BLS website ( http://www.bls.gov/) has many essays that are dozens of pages in length on hedonic theory as applied to different items.
By using the mathematical equivalent of tea leaves and goat bones, the BLS statisticians have created a surreal new reality where the “true quality adjusted” price of different goods may be “computed.” This practice creates a huge disconnect with reality.

EconPapers: Statistical Theory of Hedonic Price Indices
Abstract: In the economic literature, essentially, hedonic techniques either are applied straightforwardly or the economic foundations of the hedonic hypothesis are discussed.
After a short overview on well-known functional forms of hedonic equations, first, precise hedonic notions of a good and its price are specified.
It is shown, first, that the usual hedonic price index formulae result from estimating certain true indices in a special way and, second, that the techniques used in practice for estimating hedonic indices are just first approaches.

In that case, both the marginal value of characteristics and a fixed-weight price index can be estimated from a hedonic regression.
Since the price-cost markups are an omitted variable in the hedonic regression, they will bias the coefficients obtained.
For a special class of utility functions, we argue that a linear regression will still provide a measure of the marginal value of characteristics, but a log-linear regression will overstate these values.
