Charles was born in the palace at Stockholm.
He had seven children, of whom only three survived him, a son Charles, and two daughters, Hedwig Sophia, duchess of Holstein-Gottorp and grandmother of Tsar Peter III, and Ulrike Eleonora, who ultimately succeeded her brother on the Swedish throne.

She stayed in Gottorp for about one year and in 1700 her only child, Karl Friedrich (1700-39), was born, and two years later her husband was killed in battle.
She was Hereditary Princess of Sweden until her death, and her son stayed in Sweden until 1718, and was generally considered to be heir to the throne - instead his aunt, Ulrika Eleonora the Younger, was chosen as reigning Queen, after the death of her brother, Karl XII.
She was daughter of Duke Julius Franz von Sachsen-Lauenburg and Maria Hedwig Augusta von Pfalz-Sulzbach, and had inherited vast lands and lordships, mainly in Bohemia; she gave birth to nine children, and lived (1675-1733).

He dreamed of recovering the lost provinces, of crushing Gottorp, of acquiring Bremen, Lübeck, Wismar and Rügen, of enjoying the Sound Dues unimpaired by the Swedish exemption, and of controlling the commerce of the Elbe-in short, of establishing a position on the Baltic which might transfer to Denmark the commercial empire of the Dutch.
With the House of Gottorp the King of Denmark remained in a state of perpetual friction, and the alliance of that House with Sweden and Brunswick-Luneburg survived the death of Duke Frederick on the field of Klissow (July 19, 1702).
