Heechee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some 100,000 years earlier, the Heechee were active in discovering the galaxy, including an Australopithecine-inhabited Earth (where a sampling of the creatures were extracted and left to propogate to modern time on a Heechee station).
The inherently cautious Heechee retreated to the interior of the fl hole in the galactic core hoping to avoid being destroyed.
When a Heechee crew exited the core, they are shocked to discover that humans were flying their spaceships to all parts of the galaxy -- and one of those places happens to be the Kugelblitz, (a fl hole made of energy and not matter) where The Foe was concentrated.

And he learned where the Heechee had fled (into a livable fl hole at the galaxy's core) and why (to escape another race known as the Assassins).
The Annals of the Heechee (1987) portrayed the beginnings of a joint human-Heechee community, and the discovery of the lurking Assassins, hiding in their own version of a fl hole known as a "kugelblitz." Eventually, even the "Kugels" became integrated into the stellar community.
But matters of life and death for the Heechees and humanity ensure that the ultra-competent and wise Marc is perpetually called away from his stove.

Heechee Rendezvous is a gripping continuation of Pohl's Heechee Saga.
Each book in the Heechee Saga is a direction continuation of its predecessor, so reading book 4 is a must after this one is finished.
The purpose of the last half of the Gateway series, it seems, is to explain all of the mysteries acumulated over the space of the first two books.

Because then she said that the 'missing mass' might in fact prove that the Heechee had really begun to interfere with the orderly development of the universe-she said they were removing mass from the outer galaxies to make them fall back more rapidly.
Heechee science was not the same as human, but it rested on the same thermodynamics, the same laws of motion, the same stretch of the mind into tininess and immensity, the nuclear particle and the universe itself.
All Heechee meetings were short, when they were not social and prolonged purely for the pleasure they gave; machine-mediated discussions eliminated so much waste that the fate of a world could be settled in minutes.

Their single option is to join a mission to the fl hole at the galaxy's Core, where the Heechee themselves are hiding in dread of the Foe, the life-destroying Kugel.

But when an asteroid stocked with autonavigating spacecraft was discovered, suddenly the Heechee universe was thrown wide open, giving birth to the Gateway Corporation and bringing untold riches to the adventurers who risked the unknown to see where those Heechee spacecraft would take them.
