They were the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, usually, though also said to be daughters of Dionysus and Aphrodite or of Helios and the naiad Aegle.
The Lacedaemonians, however, say that the Graces are two, and that they were instituted by Lacedaemon, son of Taygete, who gave them the names of Cleta and Phaenna.

Since the temple of Artemis Hegemone gave access to this shrine, and since in the attribute of the torch the statue in the inner sanctuary resembled that in the outer temple, it seems probable that the Artemis of the Despoena temple was Artemis Hegemone.
The investigation of Hegemone as an epithet would be incomplete without the mention of the use of the word in three other instances: alone, as the name of a goddess; as surname of Aphrodite; in adjectival form Ἠγεμόνιος; as an epithet of Hermes.
The evidence for the worship of Aphrodite Hegemone is an altar basis found on the Acropolis at Athens with the inscription: Ἀφροδίτῃ ἡγεμόνῃ τοῦ δήμου.

There is also a Hegemone in Greek mythology who was one of the Graces worshipped in Athens.
For example, at the beginning of the reign of the Mongolian empire, Genghis Khan was the main dominating factor in a hegemonic structure that descended to his generals and lieutenants and finally to those conquered rulers who were allowed to live and serve the Khan.
In a simplistic way, we can say that the hegemonic structure that is the "whole body of practices and expectation; our assignments of energy, our ordinary understanding of the nature of man and of his world." provides the ocean of social context for an individual consciousness to swim in.
