To the relief of the township, the pigeon shoot planners canceled the event rather than proceed with a trial on Sept 22.
Although Pennsylvania humane agents supported by The HSUS are litigating the inherent illegality of pigeon shoots under the Pennsylvania cruelty code, legislation would send a clear message that Pennsylvania will not perpetuate these archaic events.

The Coleman Memorial Labour Day Pigeon Shoot, which had been scheduled for next month, has for each of the past 65 years left as many as 5,000 birds dead or dying in order to raise money for a community park.
Organisers from Hegins Township, a rural community of 5,000 people in eastern Pennsylvania, cancelled this year's shoot three weeks after the state Supreme Court ruled that opponents, including the Fund for Animals and the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, could seek a judge's order to block the event.

“Pennsylvania deer hunters are the primary mangers to keep deer populations at levels where we have healthy deer and healthy habitat, while minimizing deer-human conflicts,” added Dr. Chris Rosenberry, Game Commission Deer Management Section supervisor.
