The early Heian period (794-967) continued Nara culture; the Heian capital was patterned on the Chinese capital at Chang'an, as was Nara, but on a larger scale.

Heian Shodan is the first of the five basic Shotokan kata developed by Itosu Yasutsune (one of two of Funakoshi Gichin's main instructors).

It is believed that Master Itosu created the Heian kata from another kata he had learned from a Chinese karate exponent living in Okinawa.
