Heian nidan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heian Nidan is the second in the series of five Heian katas.
Like the other Heian kata, it is a product of Ankoh Itosu's effort to streamline several kata, into forms suitable for teaching the gross body movement skills of karate to school age kids.
The Heian kata were introduced into the school systems on Okinawa in the early 1900's, and were subsequently adopted by many teachers and schools.

The K-Zone: Kevin's Shotokan kata notes: heian nidan
Heian nidan is one of the first kata that adult karate students learn, but not usually the very first.
It is technically much more difficult to perform than heian shodan, as it involves a simultaneous kick and punch, a delicate balancing manoeuvre, `reverse' inside blocks -- which are hard on the hips when you get to a certain age -- and double and reinforced blocks.
Most beginners regard heian nidan as rather difficulty; certainly the difference between this kata and heian shodan is quite marked.

In fact, the resemblance is so strong that even long time experts and masters frequently confuse the two kata and change from one kata to the other without thinking right in the middle of national tournament performances both in Japan and in the West.
It is possible that Heian Nidan is considered more difficult today simply because of modern teaching methods being so different from what they once were on Okinawa.
Heian Nidan may be simple and easy to break down into its essential content, but within it can be found some very effective techniques and maneuvers.

Elements of the five Heian kata also resemble parts of the kata Kanku Dai, Tekki Shodan and Bassai Dai and it is possible that Sensei Itosu created them from these which would have been too difficult to teach to beginners.
The kata Heian Nidan was originally the first of the series.
Sensei Funakoshi was responsible for changing the names of the kata from Pinan to Heian in the early 1900s to faciltate the introduction of karate from Okinawa to Japan.
