The Heidelberg School was an (A nation occupying the whole of the Australian continent; aboriginal tribes are thought to have migrated from southeastern Asia 20,000 years ago; first Europeans were British convicts sent there as a penal colony) Australian art movement of the late 19th century.
The School's artists were clearly influenced by the international (A school of late 19th century French painters who pictured appearances by strokes of unmixed colors to give the impression of reflected light) Impressionism movement, and took up many of the concepts of the group.
Whilst (additional info and facts about Heidelberg) Heidelberg has long since been absorbed into greater Melbourne, some of the scenes depicted in the most famous works of the school were of scenes on the floodplain of the (additional info and facts about Yarra River) Yarra River and are thus still recognizable.

The Municipal Directory of 1883 likens Heidelberg to an English hamlet, describing it as a pretty municipal and postal village with a population of 457 and a pleasant resort for picnic and wedding parties from the city.
The population of Heidelberg was recorded as 713 in 1891 and it essentially remained a sleepy little country village until after World War I. The area is principally famous for its associations with a crucial aspect of Australia's art history.
The Heidelberg Historical Society and Museum is located in the old courthouse (1899-1900) in Jika St. It features material relating to the Heidelberg School of painters, along with historic buildings, pioneer memorabilia, photographs and sports history.

Heidelberg is one of the best preserved historic cities in Germany because it was largely spared from the devastation of World War II, unlike nearby Mannheim, Speyer or Worms.
Although Heidelberg was spared during the Second World War, it was devastated during the late seventeenth century by French troops when Loius XIV asserted his claim to the Rhine-Palatinate region adjacent to France.
Heidelberg was also a major command center for the U.S. Army in Germany, so a large number of American soldiers live in the nearby base housing in aptly named suburbs like Patrick Henry or Mark Twain Village.

With 43 of DODDS-Europe’s 115 schools currently outside of the protective perimeter of the guarded gates most military personnel are familiar with at work, risk assessors worry that the unguarded military communities may present an Achilles heel for terrorist attackers.
Brush-offs by students aside, school officials say they are taking security seriously — not only when it comes to terrorist threats, but the more common schoolyard-variety violence as well.
Called the “Safe Schools” program, local students, staff and law enforcement surveys were conducted last year and officials are now mapping strategies to begin improving the safety climate.

Thomas William Roberts (8 March 1856 - 14 September 1931), usually known simply as Tom, was a famous Australian artist and a key member of the Heidelberg School.
Settling in Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne, his first jobs were as a photographer's assistant which he performed through the 1870s while studying art at night, studying under Louis Buvelot and befriending others who were to become prominent artists, notably Frederick McCubbin.
Through the 1880s and 1890s he worked in Victoria, in his studio in Melbourne and at a number of artists' camps and visits around the colony.
