The remains of the palace, and the surrounding area, was established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 along with a number of other buildings, as the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara", and is located in the vicinity of today's Yamatokoriyama, outside the city of Nara proper.
The city, and the palace grounds, was based largely on Chang'an (present-day Xi'an), the capital of China during the T'ang Dynasty, which was contemporary to the time when Nara was capital of Japan.
The primary buildings of the Palace compound were the Daigoku-den, where governmental affairs were conducted, the Chōdō-in where formal ceremonies were held, the Dairi, the Emperor's residence, and offices for various administrative agencies.

Heijo Palace (平城京) in Nara, was the Imperial Palace of Japan during the Nara Period (710-784 CE).
The city, and the palace grounds, was based largely on Chang'an, the capital of China during the T'ang Dynasty, which was contemporary to the time when Nara was capital of Japan.

Yamatokoriyama City's Board of Education and the Gangoji Institute for Research of Cultural Property have announced the discovery of the grid system of streets modeled on such streets in China in the southern end of Kujo Street thus far considered to be outside of the Heijo Palace (710-784).
As a result, the palace area's eastern half spread at least more than 400 meters to the south, rewriting the 100-year-old established theory that there were nine streets from the north and south of the palace.
Since the Edo period when attempts to restore the Heijo Palace were carried out, nobody has noticed the existence of the grid system of streets there.
