The term crab is sometimes applied to several different groups of short (nose to tail) decapods with thick exoskeletons, but only members of the Brachyura are true crabs; other taxa, such as hermit crabs, porcelain crabs, king crabs, and horseshoe crabs are, despite superficial similarities, not crabs at all.

Heikegani - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heikegani (平家蟹, ヘイケガニ) is a species of crab native to Japan, with a shell that bears a pattern resembling a human face.
It is locally believed that these crabs are reincarnations of the spirits of the Heike warriors defeated at the Battle of Dan-no-ura as told in the Heike Monogatari ("The Tale of the Heike").
The story goes that the crabs with shells resembling Samurai were thrown back, while those not resembling Samurai were eaten, giving the former a greater chance of reproducing.

Samurai Crabs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
There are crabs to be found here with curious markings on their backs, patterns and indentations that disturbingly resemble the face of a samurai.
As the generations passed, of crabs and fishermen alike, the crabs with patterns that most resembled a samurai face survived preferentially until eventually there was produced not just a human face, not just a Japanese face, but the visage of a fierce and scowling samurai.
In the case of the Heike crab it was effected more or less unconsciously by the fishermen, and certainly without any serious contemplation by the crabs.

Perhaps the Heike crab is a good example, where for centuries Japanese fishermen have released crabs whose shell markings are thought to resemble a samurai's face.
Both the number of such crabs and their likeness to samurai faces have increased; the resemblance-bearing individual crab has increased chances of survival (and reproduction), and, it seems to me, so does the species, since there is now a large subpopulation we will not so readily hunt into extinction.
It's even possible that multiple crabs independantly developed face-like features on their backs, since, I'm assuming here, all these crabs have some feature and it's really subjective on the part of the fishermen what is face-like.

Because the people ate only the crabs without faces, the rejected Heike crabs evolved through natural selection to wear faces distinctly resembling those of Samurai warriors.
