	Temple Times: Richard Heimberg wins Paul Eberman Faculty Research Award
		It was 1980 when “social phobia” first appeared in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and three years later, Heimberg received an NIMH grant to study the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy in treating social anxiety — the first NIMH-funded award for psychological treatment-oriented research of the disorder.
		Since that first research study by Heimberg while he was on the faculty at SUNY-Albany (he came to Temple in 1996), he has been awarded three additional grants with funding totaling $5 million and has soared to the forefront of his field.
		Heimberg acknowledges he has seen dramatic changes in the field — changes that were significantly driven by his own work.

	Stemming social phobia
		Since Heimberg secured the first NIMH social phobia treatment research grant, such funding has been readily available because the condition is quite common: It's the third most prevalent mental disorder behind depression and alcoholism.
		However, Heimberg suspects a combination of CBT and medication may prove most effective in preventing relapse--something he hopes to prove in his latest NIMH study with Michael Liebowitz, MD, of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, to be completed by 2007.
		In Heimberg's CBT, the therapist gradually exposes clients to their feared social situations in real life, perhaps assigning a client to initiate a conversation with a person they don't know, ask someone out on a date or go on a job interview.
