Heimito von Doderer seems to personify the classic image of the writer.
Doderer himself regarded The Demons, on which he worked from 1931 to 1940 and then again from 1951 to 1956, as his main work and constructed Die Strudlhofstiege (1951) especially to serve as a "ramp" for it.
For Doderer, too, was part of that world, even in the fifties, which had long since heralded the dawning of a new age, and when he, a gentleman of the old school, had already become an anachronistic figure.

In fact Doderer solves nothing by advocating a far-reaching individualism, since for better or for worse the principle of association is germane to the political process in a highly organized modern society.
Secondly, the novels of Doderer, his thought, his theory and his practice should be presented in a series of monographs and in comprehensive presentations of his whole work in terms of his biography.

Café Hawelka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the outbreak of World War II, the Hawelka had to be closed, and in Fall 1945 it was reopened in the fortunately still largely intact building.
After the end of the period of occupation after 1955, the café quickly became a meeting point for writers and critics like Heimito von Doderer, Albert Paris Gütersloh, Hilde Spiel, Friedrich Torberg and Hans Weigel.
After the closing of the Café Herrenhof in 1961, even more artists gathered here and it became a central meeting place in the art scene of the time.

His interest in Doderer, for whom there is a dearth of scholarly literature in English, is particularly noteworthy.
Concerning Doderer, Luft maintains he was "an authentic storyteller about his world." I am not quite sure what that means, although authenticity also surfaces as a positive quality attributable to the project of Musil--who became "a thoughtful person about the neuroses that plagued him" (p.
Doderer's "resistance to modernity brought with it considerable ideological and political dangers," Luft continues a little later, "but he gradually developed a distinctive view of sexuality and human experience." (p.

In 'Die Strudlhofstiege', Doderer had developed a poetics of remembrance, which in 'Die Dämonen' is now subjected to a process of surfacing, a 'Veräußerlichungsimpuls'.
Since Doderer regards remembrance as an inner, psychological phenomenon, this process of surfacing leads to problems which Doderer solves by using certain techniques of surfacing: e.g.

The title is meant to render homage to Dostoyevsky (for his "Demons", also know in English as "The Possessed" or "The Devils") and points to the great influence the Russian writer had on Von Doderer's pluralistic and symphonic conception of the novel.
Von Doderer's human comedy is drawn with immense humor, as vital when ironic as when it strikes his targets with stunning satirical force; his ultimately baroque imagination is coupled with tireless verbal ingenuity.

Publisher description for Library of Congress control number 2002009182
Although we usually think of the intellectual legacy of twentieth-century Vienna as synonymous with Sigmund Freud and his psychoanalytic theories, other prominent writers from Vienna were also radically reconceiving sexuality and gender.
And Heimito von Doderer portrayed his own sexual obsessions as a way of understanding the power of total ideologies, including his own attraction to National Socialism.
For Luft, the significance of these three writers lies in their understandings of eros and inwardness and in the roles that both play in ethical experience and the formation of meaningful relations to the world-a process that continues to engage artists, writers, and thinkers today.
