Heinkel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heinkel was established at Warnemünde in 1922 as the restrictions on German aviation imposed by the Treaty of Versailles were relaxed.
Heinkel was less successful in selling fighter designs - before the war, the Heinkel He 112 had been rejected in favour of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and Heinkel's attempt to top Messerschmitt's design with the Heinkel He 100 failed due to political interference within the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM - Reich Aviation Ministry).
In 1939, the Heinkel He 176 and Heinkel He 178 became the first aircraft to fly under liquid-fuel rocket and turbojet power respectively, and Heinkel was the first to develop a jet fighter to prototype stage, the Heinkel He 280.

Heinkel He 100 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Heinkel system, designed by Jahn and Jahnke, the engine was run at 110 Celsius and the superheated fluid was then sprayed into the interior of a centrifugal compressor, allowing the pressure to drop and steam to form.
Heinkel had decided to build a total of 25 of the aircraft one way or the other, so with 10 down there were another 15 of the latest model to go.
However the design of the He 100 made adaptation to the 211 difficult; both the cooling system and the engine mounts were designed for the 601, and a switch to the 211 would have required a redesign.

Ernst Heinkel, founder of Heinkel Aircraft Works, was born in the German province of Swabia in 1888.
Heinkel set up a small factory that built electrical equipment, but he was eager to return to building airplanes.

Heinkel might have won the competition had the B model been available in early 1936, but by the time they were ready in the second half of the year the 109 was already in series production.
Heinkel had decided to build a total of 25 of the planes one way or the other, so with 10 down there were another 15 of the latest model to go.
The use of laughing gas on the Heinkel suggested the plane's nickname, the plane was referred to as the "he he".

 Politics, lobbying and production
Heinkel's team under the Gunthers used He 70 experience to create the shapely He 112, which was much smaller and of wholly light-alloy stressed skin construction.
Though Heinkel's fighter was marginally slower, it had better field performance, much better pilot view (especially on the ground), a wide-track landing gear and considerably better manoeuverablility.
Many, especially Heinkel, were amazed when the Messershmitt design was chosen for the Luftwaffe, thought the He112 was continued as an insurance.

Disappointed by the loss of the Luftwaffe's fighter orders to BFW and it's Bf 109 and the failure of the He 112, Heinkel set out to build a lighter and faster fighter that was also cheaper and easier to build.
The He 100 achieved some of it's speed by doing away with the anti-aerodynamic radiatoer and using a surface evaporative system for cooling.
Even though the He 100 broke several world speed records, the RLM was solidly supportive of the Bf 109 and failed to order the He 100 into production.

Even before the war it was becoming apparent to some aircraft designers that propeller driven aircraft were nearing the limits of their possible performance.
With the world speed record smashed by the Heinkel He 100 and shortly after by the Me 209 it was clear that no matter how much power a piston-engine plane possessed it could only approach the speed of sound, an entirely new method of propulsion would be needed to achieve greater performance.
The world's first jet fighter, the Heinkel He 280, took the air on March 30, 1941 in a flight lasting just three minutes - this was a scant six weeks before a specially built Gloster plane (E.28/39) flew using Frank Whittle's turbojet design.
