Heinkel also provided the Luftwaffe's heaviest operational bomber, the Heinkel He 177, although this was never deployed in significant numbers.
Heinkel was less successful in selling fighter designs - before the war, the Heinkel He 112 had been rejected in favour of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and Heinkel's attempt to top Messerschmitt's design with the Heinkel He 100 failed due to political interference within the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM - Reich Aviation Ministry).
In 1939, the Heinkel He 176 and Heinkel He 178 became the first aircraft to fly under liquid-fuel rocket and turbojet power respectively, and Heinkel was the first to develop a jet fighter to prototype stage, the Heinkel He 280.

 Heinkel He 100
In the Heinkel system, designed by Jahn and Jahnke, the engine was run at 110 Celsius and the superheated fluid was then sprayed into the interior of a centrifugal compressor, allowing the pressure to drop and steam to form.
Heinkel had decided to build a total of 25 of the planes one way or the other, so with 10 down there were another 15 of the latest model to go.
The fact is that Heinkel was well respected within the establishment regardless of Messerschmitt's success with the 109 and 110, and this argument seems particularly weak.

Heinkel He 100D-0 Review by Glen Porter (Special Hobby 1/72)
On opening the box, I was taken aback by how small the Heinkel is, which is strange because I've always assumed it was about the same size as a 109 and it is. The smaller of the two sprues has just the three main wing parts.
The rest of the parts are on the main sprue and Special Hobby has made an effort to produce some detail in the cockpit in plastic with-out have to put a lot of PE in there.
I am told that when MPM first went into business, the Heinkel He 100 was one of their first kits.

Even though the Heinkel He 100 was more powerful than its competitor, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, it failed to become Luftwaffe's standard fighter.
One of the twelve production-series D-1 aircraft was photographed and described as the new Luftwaffe's fighter, the Heinkel He 113.Several prototypes were brought up to D-1 production-series standard and were purchased by the Soviet Union and Japan purchased 3 prototypes.

The gist of the article is that Goebbels and his German intelligence chums 'invented' the Heinkel, created a silhouette and spec.
The consequence being that once allied air crew 'knew' it existed because they had seen the silhouette and because it was talked about they 'saw' it whilst in action.
