It was fortunate for the Allies that the He-162 was much too late to be anything more than a footnote to the history of the air war over Europe, but a certain curiosity remains over what it might have been able to do had events been more favorable to it.

Of interest is that the He 162 was in fact based on an earlier Heinkel design for the P.1073 jet fighter project.
The He 162 was officially designated as the "People's Fighters" (Volksjäger) by the Luftwaffe, which, when completed, was to be flown by the Hitlerjugend.
At least one He 162 (M42) is known to have flown towards the end of March 1945 in Bad Gandersheim with two Argus As 014 thruster rockets; the same power plants used on the V-1.

 Heinkel He 162 Information
However, Heinkel had already been working on a series of "paper projects" for light single-engine fighters over the last year under the designation P.1073, and had gone so far as to build and test several models and conduct some wind tunnel testing.
The first flight of the He 162 V1, by test pilot Gotthard Peter, was fairly successful, but during a high-speed run at 840 km/h the highly acidic replacement glue (for the Tego-Film adhesive that was no longer available) holding the nose gear cover on failed and the pilot was forced to land.

Heinkel was selected by the rapidly expanding Luftwaffe to adapt the He 70 and He 111 for military use as bombers, the latter becoming the mainstay of later German bombing campaigns.

Heinkel’s foray into car manufacture was brief, and made under adverse conditions, which is what makes them so highly prized today.

 He-162 Volksjaeger
The Heinkel proposal was accepted as being the quickest to implement and the He-162 began serious development from Heinkel P.1073.
Heinkel was given a contract to produce 1000 aircraft which the administration called “Salamander” (Heinkel called it “Sparrow”) to be delivered by end of April 1945 with production scheduled to ramp up to 2000 units per month by May 1945.
On April 19 1945 the He-162 drew blood for the first time by downing an RAF fighter but that Salamander was shot down by a Hurricane on its approach to the field.

The He-162 Salamander is interesting not only in itself but for the insight its creation gives us into the minds of the German leadership at the time.Göring and others seriously wanted the plane to be piloted by half trained members of the Hitler Youth.
Despite the often brilliant innovations of their fighter plane designers and the undeniable skill of their airmen it was the German leadership that lead to the ultimate failure of their fighter force in the Second World War.
